Hi Doug:
Great playing and very enjoyable. Drove by the Northampton exit today on the Mass Pike and thought of you. I spent a week at the canyon Ranch in Lenox for some rehab and what a beautiful area in the Berkshires'.
Next time I'll stop by for a lesson.

Thanks Len, yes, the Berkshires are beautiful, especially this time of year. I've played a lot of gigs in that area, Lenox, Stockbridge, Great Barrington. Tomorrow night I'm playing an outdoor gig in N.Y. state and I'll be driving through the Berkshires. Yes, stop in the next time you come out this way.

Thanks George, actually those extra 4 beats are in Hank Williams' original recording.
Hank puts the extra measure in at the end of the third line, in every verse. He draws out the last word of the third line, like this:
Some later recordings by other singers don't do that, and some do. And some instrumentalists don't play it like that, and some do. I listened to many versions of the song on youtube and I decided to play it the way Hank sang it. I used to play it without the extra bar until I sat down and listened closely to Hank's original, and now it sounds rushed without the extra bar in there.

Thank you kindly Doug for the correction. I guess I was misled back in the late '40's when the question arose and I was told at that time the correct way was without the extra beats. It does seem logical and unrushed with the additional beats.

Thanks George, I don't think you were misled back in the day when you were told to play the song without the extra bar because a lot of singers recorded it that way, and it really makes more sense that way. Some songs change over the years, especially when covers become bigger hits than the original. A good example of that is "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". Hank recorded that as a simple 3 chord song, bare bones. But over the years singers and bands have embellished the song with additional chords that sound excellent IMO. I've played that song with many bands and all of them play the substitute chords, so that seems to have become standard.
Cold Cold Heart on the other hand... I think most steel guitarists nowadays do not include the extra measure. I notice that Jerry Byrd did not include it in his version. But Kayton Roberts and some others do include it. I always pay close attention when playing the song with an unfamiliar singer, and I'm ready to go either way...

I noticed that this tune from your new book was done on a 6 string A6th. Will all the tunes in the new book be for A6th? I have your first two C6th books but I prefer to play them on my Ath tuning. I know the only difference is the high 5th with A6th. Thanks, George |
