Where can I get knee lever kits for an Emmons S-10 push/pull? Is anyone making them, or is each one a custom design for a specific guitar and installation.?
Thanks, Larry Robertson

I'd try Mike Cass, Lynn Stafford, Billy Knowles or the Emmons Guiar Company.

Larry, I think the kits are all basically the some for all P/P's, (polished or unpolished) single or double neck and Lane put you on the right folks to get one, or two.

According to the Clem Schmitz booklet & DVD entitled "Methodology and Practice in Pedal Steel Guitar, a guide to practical understanding and repair," there are both two-piece and three-piece levers on a push/pull, depending on which way the lever will be moving.

For example, on the E9 neck, the LKL is a two-piece lever, and it mounts on the crossbar. The LKR is a three-piece lever, and it mounts on the cabinet. They are generally not interchangeable.

There may be others who have discovered alternative methods, but Clem has been working on original Emmons guitars for as long as almost anybody who is still sucking air.

Hey thanks folks, I called Lynn Stafford and we had a nice talk about it. Great fellow! Basically, if you want to add a knee lever, it's gotta be custom built for guitar/installation. Also, some p/p's had anodized levers (black) and some had plain aluminum ones, so if you want to match what's already on the guitar it further complicates the issue. He said there are some old parts around, pretty rare, and hard to get anyone to part with them. He estimated adding a lever at around $600.

That $600 quote was for another person that contacted me who was interested in a specific '74 Emmons S-10 3x3 in a craigslist ad in Boulder, CO.

He wanted to know how much the parts would be to add both a 4th pedal and 4th lever to that particular steel. According to the photos he sent me there are issues with the way the RKR was installed, which meant that some additional parts would be required, in order to get everything squared away.

It looks as though Larry ended up buying it for himself earlier today, according to the email I received from the seller.

As far as PP knee lever kits go; they really have to be ordered specifically for each individual situation, because of all the variables involved.

For example: When was the guitar built? There are different styles of bell cranks, black anodized vs. non-anodized lever handles, as well as different handle lengths. Is the guitar a D-10 or an S-10, where will the lever be located and what changes will it need to make? Different length pull or push rods are required, depending on location of the intended lever or pedal. In addition, hooks, spacers, compression springs, Set collars, lever stops, and the like would be required to put a kit together, depending on where it will be mounted and what it's intended use is. There is a lot more than meets the eye here.

No, Chris, it's not right at all. Apparently there was a miscommunication between Larry and I. PP knee lever kits generally run around $250 give or take, depending all the variables I mentioned above.

Yes.....Lane is correct (as always)....BUT.....Emmons Guitar Company lists those knee lever parts for about $325 per lever.....a bit costly....
Cass, Knowles,Stafford, etc, should be able to do better.
BUT....if you want the best bang for the buck......contact the MASTER----Clem Schmitz in Minneapolis....he just added three levers to my Emmons push pull at a very reasonable cost. A very fine man and pedal steel expert!

Steven, spambots and scammers hunt forums for email addresses, it's probably unwise to post someone's email here. Saying something like "PM me for his email" would be smarter.

Gentlemen, first let me apologize for mis-understanding Lynn ! I guess I quoted him incorrectly in my post as to the cost of adding knee levers to the guitar in question. I stated in my post $600 per lever, which was incorrect per Lynn's and my conversation. The $600 would be a ballpark figure for another pedal and lever, as Lynn stated above. I think his comments regarding each installation being quite different is accurate and as a result would be more expensive than what we are used to paying for adding levers & pedals. Lynn is also correct in saying that I bought that Emmons S-10 with 3 pedals and 3 knee levers yesterday. I have become a lover of the Push/pull tone and need a light weight steel because I have chronic back pain and can't lift much anymore. Last, let me recommend Lynn to anyone needing work on a pedal steel. We have had a few discussions in the past and he has always been very friendly and forthcoming with steel info. I hope this post clears up any mis- conceptions.
