No kidding - I have an 0.068 that's about a quarter-tone sharp when barred at the 12 fret.

I doubt there is anything to be done but replace it, but just curious of anyone's ever seen anything like this.

How is this even possible? I guess 1/2 is no longer
equal to 1/2.

On a regular guitar that has an adjustable bridge (like a Gibson tune-0-matic) the lower strings are always set longer so they intonate up the neck. A 68 is a much heavier string than normally used on a regular guitar, so I believe it would need to be set even longer than is normally done on a regular guitar.

It does not surprise me that a 68 on a PSG would intonate sharp at the 12th fret. Since PSG's don't have adjustable bridges we have to adjust with the tone bar, or avoid playing such a heavy string in the upper registers.

Change the string, maybe it's seriously out of spec.

You might be pressing down too hard on the bar, which, will affect the intonation on any fret with that thick of a string. I find that to be true with my U-12 ZumSteel. Light pressure works the best. Does it harmonic correctly at the 12th? If so, it's probably the pressure you're exerting.

John, I find that to be true also. Since I play my low B so much I switched to a .072 string with much better results . Also my low B is only raised to C# the rest are lowers changes so it works for me. I still have to watch the pressure but not nearly as much now.

Speaking as an ex bass player, adjustable bridge and all, big fat strings just don't sound good up there.

IMHO.

John DeMaille - yep. that nearly has to be it. The 12 fret harmonic is fine. I probably have something like "parallax" only with pressure - being newerish to the 12, the nut behind the wheel is the likely culprit.

Ian Rae: As a fellow long-time bass player, I'd have to agree. As the old saw goes, nothing good happens above the seventh fret anyway Smile

I appear to now have the ... opportunity to reevaluate bar pressure.

Les, it's just another quirk of playing the steel. There are many that pop up along the way.
Some are easy to identify and correct, others not so. Good luck in your progress.
