Do ANY of YOU.........
by chance have a copy of Roy Clark's "Put You Sweet Lips A Little Closer to the Phone"..........????

I'm not sure that is the correct title........but you know the one I'm referring to. It could be "He'll Have to Go".........

JERRY BYRD plays steel on Roy's record but now, Roy apparently recorded several different cuts of that song. I've listened to several and they are not the one I'm looking for.

Hope someone in this wonderful world-wide organization will be able to help me out.

Ray:
You are probably looking for the song as done on his 1963 Capitol lp "Tip of My Fingers".

Anybody with that lp could run you off an mp3 of the song.

I really like that tune, called "He'll Have to Go." The first time I heard it, it was done by Ry Cooder, but was originally a hit for Jim Reeves.

Here is Ry's version (no steel guitar, but plenty accordion): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_scC6iFf1Nc

I think you can get the mp3 on amazon for $1.29 in his 1969 Greatest Hits LP which is listed as 2008, but the picture on the LP sure looks like Roy is 69 and not today!

That would work Darrell as long as that 2008 re-release wasn't re-mastered to take the steel out as record companies are known to do today to get away from the "too country" label.

Best bet is still the original of both lp's.

If record companies are actually doing this, then what hope is left for the steel guitar? Confused Oh Well

I first met Ry at McCabe's Guitars back in 1959. Ry was about 11 or 12 and already a fabulous picker. I don't know if he went to high school; he was always in the store when I got done with school myself. When I saw him at the Universal Amphitheater in the 70's his band consisted of Gabby on steel and slack key, Flaco jimenez on accordion, Flaco's alto sax guy, a three man, black, trio of background singers, Freebo on bass and Jim Keltner on drums. WOW! Elcectic music at it's best.
