I'm sure this question has been asked many times before, so bear with me!
I heard 'Hey, Good Looking' played on the radio today,
and it reminded me how good the guitar solo was.
The last time I heard it was years ago, in my 'pre-steel guitar obsession' days.
Am I right in guessing it's a 6-string lap steel? And if so, what was the tuning...and of course, who was playing it? |

Don Helms played the "Hey Good Looking" solo on his popular instruction book. The tuning is E6 with a high G# ( G# E C# B G# E) He probably played on the record too, but hank had a few other Steelers early on, including Jerry Byrd.
Don's version in the book is in the key of C. It's a nice fun tune to play and no bar slants needed!

| Don would have used his double 8 string Gibson Console on the recording but on the solo (and most of the other stuff he played with Hank) he only used the 6 highest strings, so it can definitely be played on a 6 string lap steel. |
