A few years ago, for whatever jackass reason, I sold my carter S10 w 5+5,,, That guitar was made for me by John Fabian, with very specific instructions on what I wanted it to sound like, and it was perfect.. Played it everywhere for 10 years, and it did every single thing I asked of it to perfection.. I sold it because I wanted to start playing vintage "wood/lacquer pedal steels" again...
After having 7 or 8 other steels through here, not one of which was right for me, i found another 5+5 Carter s10, at a price I could deal with... Needs to be re configured back to E9, but its nothing I can't handle.. I think Carter steels play as easily as any other steel ever made, and they have a "vintage" tone as well, somehow.. I recall discussing Carter steels with John Fabian,[God rest his soul] and he told me in all seriousness that his guitars sounded close to the Sho Bud steels.. I thought at the time "yeah right", but he was very accurate, especially if using single coils wound to Bud specs.. To my ears Carters don't really sound "modern".. In any case I bought it from a member here, we just finalized the deal... Have a look... bob

Welcome back Bob. That is an interesting Carter. Must have been built for someone switching from a D10 to a single C6, by the location of the pedals. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . That looks very, very, very similar to the black top - blue sides Carter I bought from the factory new in 2001 as a C6th 4+5 then sent back to the factory to have the vertical (5th) LKV put on and the pedals moved right to the center for two-footed heaven. Hmmm. VERY.... Do, at least, give the Alumitone a close listen, even if you must destroy the finest 10-string C6th copeedo ever invented (with one minor change, swap LKL and LKV). You may need a pile of rods to move everything all the way over to the left again, but they're probably the easiest thing to come by.
Oh. Pix 7 is kind of a giveaway. I am not responsible for the sex wax or peace-through-music stickers. If you do ever need to dump this one too, please try to do so when I'm not in hock up to my eyeballs for my new front teeth. But please do play the living stuffin' out of her, I had a bizarre "bonding issue" with it having to do with my collapsing spinal discs, 9/11, not having slept a wink for five months* due to pain, and my eventual neck operation. Too long for here but I'll PM it if desired.
*(oh yes you can, but only other "spinies" will believe you.) |

The owner told me the original owner DID send this back to Carter, so it may very well have been yours David.. I look forward to setting it back to where its "should " be.. lol.. I promise you, it will be played a LOT, and will be seen and heard by many many people before I get too old to do gigs.... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

David.. I think I will make my own rods, and do away with some of the Carter "dog bones" in favor of brass rods with set screws... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Bob... I changed out the rods on my main 3 pedals. I used the brass barells that Carter used for the intermediate linkage rods on their knee levers. I bought some 3/32" stainless welding rod and cut them to length, and threaded them. They work great and the dog bones are gone. If I decide to do the rest, I will try changing out the socket head cap screw with a set screw so the cap screw doesn't get in the way of other rods, as happened to me. Had to take the barrell and put it in from the other side of the pull bar. It's such a relief to know I won't break another dog bone (pull pin ) break on stage. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Richard.. I was thinking of simply using these.. I generally use mild steel for pull rods.. Cheaper and easier to thread..bob

Bob... Those are about the same as the Carter ones, but with the set screw. Check to make sure they are 3/16" diameter or they won't fit in the Carter pull bars. I wanted to buy a physical half stop from him, but these collars were too big for the pull bar. Let me know if these fit. I would rather buy them already with the set screw instead of the socket head cap screw.
By the way, the stainless rods were not that hard to thread. Is the mild steel plated? If not,I would think they might rust. Even if plated with zinc or cadmium, any place the rods rubbed would rub though the plating. There must be a good reason why most of the builders I know of use stainless.
I got mine through Amazon for $12. There is enough to do my whole E9 neck..
