I have an old Fender 1000. I keep breaking the G# on the top of the e neck. It snaps when I pedal it to the A. The funny thing is that it breaks right where the winding around the little ball on the end stops. There is nothing there to rub on. I have bent the hook 45 degrees to no avail. I am using oo9s. Should I use a heavier string? I am tempted to tune down a half step to e flat. As I am still learning a half step up with the bar should not be a problem. Does anyone have any ideas? I would be most grateful for any help I can get as this is slowly driving me crazy.

Have you tried adding an additional piece at the end of the hook? I've read Al Brisco saying he uses a piece of coat hanger to lessen the angle. My 400 has had a similar modification, not sure if its a piece of a coat hanger or what it is, but it rarely brakes the G#. I'll take a picture and post it if you think it will help.

also there is a fender steel forum that has a ton of great information on this type of stuff..

Does your guitar have the roller nut, or just a solid bar for a bridge? Most players tuned the long-scale Fenders down a full tone (to D9th) to reduce string breakage. (This also gives those guitars a little bit better sound.)
