Well perhaps some may not call it a restoration but pretty darn close in my opinion... I acquired this steel about a month ago, very nice player, filthy with grease and grime and a couple of odd parts,( older Sho Bud ) but for the most part ( 95%) early 80's Sho Bud with cast pullers and spring clips. Triple raise double lower.
The guitar had a slight overtone vibration on strings 5 and 6 which bugged me, so I did the next best thing, I took the whole dang thing apart including the changer assy. Every screw every cross shaft etc...Inspected , cleaned, lubed , polished and began reassembly.
With excellent advise and information from both Ricky Davis and James Moorhead ,the re-assembly is complete. A few dings in the body which gives it character along with a fresh cleaning and lube of every component, I am expecting good things from this axe. With new strings on and tuned to pitch, I did not observe any overtones /vibrations from the roller nut axle and roller disks. I did do something last minute to get more angle from the roller bridge to the tuning post for 5 and 6, I wound the strings to the bottom of the peg rather than the top. Action is excellent but still needs some pedal adjustments.
Fact of the matter is it took less than two hrs to take the entire Steel apart and perhaps I will have another 6 hrs or so total putting it all back together which includes the complete cleaning process. So, a full 8 or 10 hr day....
The last three being the reassembled Steel...and yes I did take the entire changer apart inspected each finger for wear/grooves, then cleaned and polished each finger... etc..

thanks feller's..
Well this morning I added the 2nd string raise ( co-oped with the 1st string raise puller ) so now I can't stop playing the dang thing...
Standard Emmons ABC
E raise and lower on the left leg
RKL, raise 1+2 and lower 6, I have to get used to 6 being dropped at the same time as 1 and 2 going up. But I am really liking the 6 lower, gives me some of the Franklin change that I have on my Carter. That Steel raises 7 along with 1 and 2...
RKR, double 2nd string lower and 9 lower
Wonderful Steel, couldn't be more pleased with the outcome and performance so far...oh and the sound's not bad either . Plus I'm getting addicted to this green stained wood grain body.
The mild vibrations from strings 5 and 6 ( new strings) which caused me to just stop and take it all apart are also gone.
Gordy, next time we gig together I'll bring it along for the ride.
As mentioned above, total time in around 10 hours. Soup to nuts. _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

What is that rectangular metal plate that is bolted up against the roller bridge? Having never taken a pedal steel apart, I have never seen this. |

Later Buds had a tongue that was designed to reduce cabinet drop (I think).
Unless Show Pro does it, I don't think the practice continues. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Lane, you are correct...Ricky Davis confirmed that Paul Franklin SR. designed that keyhead for that reason, in an earlier post. _________________ “TONESNOB†|

Yes, and the only access to the two screws in the tongue is to remove the fret board, of which Ricky Davis informed me ! Then removing the raised neck was also a piece of cake. 8 screws from the top, 2 from the bottom. _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Great job Tony! I'm working on a '73 S-10 that James found for me. Similar color, but darker. Tomorrow I start plugging holes, as I'm going to install James barrels behind FOUR hole pullers.
Cleaned up the body with Meguiare's Swirl Remover 2.0. Best stuff I've ever found!
