And he seems to only use a thumb pick,there's a couple of vids of him on The Lawrence Welk Show,Sentimental Journey and another. His tuning sounds B11 ish. And now that I think about it,that was most likely my first exposure to steel guitar.We watched LW every week.

He's playing a Fender pedal steel on the LW shows. The Fender 1000 owner's manual shows E7 and A6 tunings. It also says that the pedals provide "thirty useable tunings on two necks"! In the early days the pedals were considered tuning changers, not necessarily for playing "pedal licks" like today.

And that steel he's playing looks like the first fret is where the second fret aughta be.What's up with dat?
