Gryphon's ebay site is offering (for a mere $4,000) a butchered 7 string Ricky A 22 with what must be an interesting history, even if it's not Alvino Rey's guitar. I don't get the concept (especially that awful tailpiece instead of the string through mounting!), but I was thinking that if you put this unit inside, say, a cello, you'd have a musical turducken. Just sayin'...

Reminds me of the Larkin Poe B6. Easy to imagine that Megan Lovell's creation was spurred by Alvino's idea.

I saw this guitar at Gryphon. It's a very interesting instrument. The guitar body is not in the best shape, but the frying pan looks to be in great shape. The original bridge has a piece of plastic covering the string holes, and the top of the guitar has a plastic piece covering the original hole in the top. I remarked at the time that somebody's kitchen was missing some tiles.
When I saw it, they also had a box of materials from the previous owner - some instructional materials, some HSGA newsletters from the 1980s, and a bunch of letters from the owner to various sources trying to find out what he had. I remember a letter from George Gruhn saying he didn't know who made the guitar body, and other correspondence with the same results. The owner tried to figure out who made it and when, but could not as far as I could tell.
In my opinion, it's a really nice seven string A22 with some stuff hanging off it. Remove the stuff and you've got a pretty rare guitar that should be a fine instrument. Or leave the stuff and you've got a conversation piece as well as a fine instrument.

thats really odd that it has no string thru holes at the bridge which leads one to believe this guitar was custom ordered for the purpose of making it like this.

No, it appears to have the string holes plugged by a piece of plastic.

The frypan looks to be in decent condition. I have one just like it, early 30s 7 string. Don't know about a value on it, with the wood body though. If it was mine, I would toss the wood body !  |
