My E66 pickups, both necks, have become microphonic. So much so that they are picking up pedal noise and sending it through. I can tap them with the pad of my finger lightly and hear it loud through the amp, or scratch them with my fingernail. I've had these pickups for 4 or 5 years and they have only recently become microphonic. Are they not potted, and is this normal for the E66? The E9 neck is worse than the C6. I guess because I use the E9 neck most, and possibly the vibrations from the strings have loosened the wire coils.

Who makes a pickup that holds up better than this?

The only way to really tell is the pickup is microphonic is to remove the strings. Then, if tapping the pickup or working the pedals makes noises that come through the amp, the pickup is indeed microphonic. Remember, the pickup senses movement of the strings, so increased play in the mechanism which is transmitted to the body will also make noises, since the cabinet transmits vibrations all through the cabinet, and into the strings via the changer and nut.

In other words, parts wearing out will also make noises that come through the amp. (Noisy guitars will make noises, regardless of what pickup is used.) Winking

Thanks Donny,

I changed strings last night and while they were off I taped and rubbed the pickups. The E9 is almost like a mic, I can tap my finger across it and hear it in the amp. That's without the strings. The C6 is not so bad.
