I've noticed various ZB (but possibly this applies to other makers...or did anyone else make 11-string necks?) 11-string steels aren't consistent as to whether the six strings are on the bass or treble side.
As a player who'd be inclined toward Extended E9th, I wonder why would anyone want six on the treble side? The extended/extra string is a lower E (maybe G#). Putting the six on the treble side messes with years of 10-string orientation to 5 + 5. Is there a manufacturing reason for 5 + 6 as opposed to 6 + 5? Is there some other tuning that inspires the 5 + 6 configuration?
(I don't know enough about C6th to raise the question there.)

Given that keyhead orientation stops mattering as soon as it crosses the roller nut, I'm not sure it matters.

I have an S-11 RusLer, that, I bought in 1976. It sounds very much like ZB, but, plays much nicer and easier to adjust, if needed.
BTW- It's 5/4 |

If I had an S-11, I would add an E below the 10th string B. If I had a D-11, I would also put a G string as string number 2 and have the D on string 1.

I don't think it makes much difference on a single-neck guitar. But if I were building a double, I'd put the most keys on the front and back side, leaving more space at the center of the guitar. Guitars with very little space between the center keys (like the E9th 10th string tuner and the C6th 1st string tuner) always strike me as "lacking in design".
Some guitars have keys that will actually hit each other! That goes beyond "general lacking in design", and actually comes closer to "half-assed stupid".  |

There were two D-11 Emmons PP guitars, a wraparound (Bill Echols) and a cut-tail (Bobby Garret). I bought the cut-tail from Hank Eldridge.
And I have a 1964 Permanent with a D-11, 16, also made for Bobby Garrett
