So I traded a 1951 Fender T-8 for the 1969 Sho-Bud pictured below. It is an all original 3 +4. Can anyone help me with the model, pickup and any other info like tone, operating issues I might encounter, etc? Might be set up for C6. How hard are they to change to E9? Thx!

Tim, contact Larry Robertson thru the forum. He lives close and has helped me a lot with my old Bud. |

With three pedals and the LKR lever it would have left the factory as an E9 guitar. We would have to see the undercarriage to identify the works, from what I can see I suspect possibly late rack and barrel or more likely the two-hole puller system that came after. I don't believe the SuperPro mechanism showed up on any round-front guitars but I'm no expert.... |

Dave,
I'd really doubt it's barrels behind two hole pullers, as that system came into being mid '73. If it's racks and barrels, it's easy to put into any tuning one would want. |

Thanks - I think it looks great, too, but I am completely ignorant of these guitars. I am specifically looking for info about 1969 Sho-Bud 3 + 4. I'm guessing some of the knees were added after it was built. Are they good sounding, good playing? Do they stay in tune? What pickup is in there, etc. Can some of you Sho-Bud experts give me a complete rundown?
The main reason for the trade was that the owner was looking for an old T-8 and I happened to have one. I will get the Sho-Bud in a few weeks and am wanting to lean more about it, while I am waiting.

FWIW, I've got a '71 6139 model shobud, it was converted to barrels behind two hole pullers. It sounds and plays wonderful! You'll most likely like your new shobud...once it's set up to your liking/needs. Good luck! _________________ “TONESNOB” |

being a '69 it would have come with rack and barrels and at least one curved knee. great looking steel.
knee levers added aren't original...so we can't know if anything underneath has been altered also.
i don't think the sho-bud pickup had a white rim, so that's probably been changed.
bottom line is: if it plays well mechanically and sounds good it's a keeper. that's a cool little steel!
(editing to say i can't remember...my zum and emmons had a white line on the pickups but i kinda thought my old professional sho-bud didn't...??
i could be wrong)

I agree with Chris. I zoomed in, and the knee levers appear to be straight, not the period-correct teardrop shape. I'm not sure about the white trim on the pup though. Could that just be a photographic anomaly? Should be a great playing and sounding guitar! Sure is pretty too! |

Tim, looks like a RnB Roundfront 'bud. Odds are it plays snd sounds super. Easy to change pulls on too. You'll love it, I suspect. I don't see a coil tap switch on it. Might not be the original PU. You can usually get one from James Morehead. Gerry Wallace might have one too. Enjoy. Beautiful ShoBud. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

I can't get the picture of mine to load on this device...but mine has the white trim or binding around the pickup. It's a great sounding pickup. Has a nice balanced tone, and a pleasant "snarl" at higher volume.
I'd be interested, if in fact it isn't original, who/what pickup it is? _________________ “TONESNOB” |
