I have a GFI student model with 3x4. My problem is that levers that lower & raise the e's are on the left side. Can these be switched over to the right side of the guitar.the lever that raise strings 1&7 and lower 2&9 I really don't care about. Is this something I can do myself

Hi Jack, I have owned a GFI student for several years and have learned a few things about them that you may find helpful. Their beauty is in simplicity of design and the ability to make changes easily. They have evolved somewhat so earlier models may have some differences. My used one came modified with E on bottom, D on a lever (RL) and E lower RR. From there I have tried many ideas I've picked up from reading here on the forum. E lowers are now on LR. I tried Day for a while but changed it back. I've added pull kits and extra 3 hole fingers etc. The fingers on the student are different (one piece) but alot of the other parts are the same as on the "pro" models. Bob at GFI is very helpful and will sell you what you need. Your limitations (besides your own tinkering abilities) are those inherent with the pull release design. Pedals and left moving levers are pulls. Right moving levers are lowers (unless you use a reverser). The trick is to balance the string tension with that of the return springs on lowers by changing the length of the "spring rod" (for lack of a better description). I use small turn buckles from the hardware store so I can fine tune the tension. Once balanced the guitar is very stable and stays in tune well.
