recently purchased a new Peavey 1502-4 BW speaker to replace the non-stock speaker in my Session 500.
The new speaker has the basket with the magnets bolted onto the back. (so you can just buy a new basket assembly if the speaker blows - and re-use the exisiting magnets). The magnet part on the new speaker is a good bit bigger than the back of the speaker I removed (which drops right in without a problem
The speaker doesn't look like it will drop into the baffle as the magnet part of the assembly is bumping up against the back of the chasis (at least thats what it looks like to me). Is this a lost cause, or is there a way I can use the new speaker in the amp?
Thanks. |

My first thought, without seeing the amp, is that it should still fit, but might have a time trying to clear that angled wall that keeps the power supply/power amp walled in.
I wonder if you could remove the studs, turn them around, and mount the speaker to the front of the baffle. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

The Session 500 I had had a 1502 in it, so unless they modified the cabinet, it should fit right in. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Richard, I don't think the cabinet was altered.
This is what I ordered
http://peavey.com/products/index.cfm/item/717/116638/1502-4BW%26trade%3B
What I received is the basket assembly with the speaker and mangents assembled
Like this with the magnet section bolded on the back
http://www.amazon.com/Peavey-1504-4-Black-Replacement-Basket/dp/B004RGBIJK/ref=pd_rhf_pe_p_tnr_2
(this not the exact item - just a picture of what the basket assembly looks like)
So I'm thinking that maybe the basket+magnet combination has different dimensions that the stand alone speaker. I can re-seat the speaker that was in there when I got it right away, but no go for the basket+magnet assembly doesn't want to sit in the holes no matter what I try.
My thought is that since I didn't really order the basket assembly, they sent me something different than what I ordered and maybe can get them to sent the procuct I ordered. |

It should be an acceptable size, really. I don't think the BW magnet has grown since the 1502 came out. I do recall it being a real pain to horse it around the baffle and onto the studs. There's not a lot of extra room there.
And a Black Widow speaker IS a basket with the magnet bolted on to it. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I've tried separating the cone from the magnets, and attaching just the basket, then trying to bolt the magnet to the back of the speaker. The angled wall part of the baffle doesn't allow enough room for the magnet slide in far enough to align with the speaker back, and to attach the bolts.
who knows maybe someone did fiddle with the baffle at some point. Thanks for the advice |

Pictures of what you are talking about would be a great help. I believe the 1502 in my Session 500 (long gone now) is identical to the 1502 in my Nashville 400. It has a huge magnet. I doubt anyone went to the hassle of modifying that cabinet.
Just re-read your last post. Attaching the basket to the baffle and then attaching the magnet is not the way to do it. I would be afraid of screwing up the voice coil as I tried to line it up with the voice coil slot in the magnet. It won't take much to damage it. You might have to remove the chassis if it is in the way. I do that on my Nashville 400 if I need to remove the speaker. It's been so long since I had a Session 500, I don't remember what the insides looked like. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . You are dropping this in from the front of the baffle, right? |

Richard, the power supply and power amp section of a 500 stick down low, with a diagonal baffle.
Howard just hit on it. If your studs stick into the back of the amp, someone has screwed with your amp.
To replace the speaker, you pop off the front screen (it's either velcro or interlocking plastic pins), and mount it from the front. I just checked my 500. The speaker mounts on the front. That means that the magnet sits an inch and a half (or two inches) farther from the amp baffle than yours.
Remove the studs and put them back in the right way, poking towards the front rather than the rear. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Cool Lane. I never had to mess with the speaker in my 500. It didn't live long enough. It kept breaking down under warranty. Finally the music store gave up and took it back and gave me a new Nashville 400 in exchange. I just had to pay the sales tax. When it worked, the 500 was an awesome amp. Just really heavy. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I as able to swap out the 1501 speaker from my Session 400 and install that in the Session 500 cabinet. I then put the new speaker (1502?) in the Session 400.
The diameter of the magnet portion of the new speaker the dealer sent me was about 8 3/4. The diameter of the magnet section of the 1501 I took out of the session 400 was about 7 1/4. So the magnet assembly was a good bit larger on the new 1502 speaker.
I have a call in to Peavey about this.
Perhaps the dealer attached the wrong magnet to the speaker they shipped me. Thinking of just leaving things the way they are, as this was a freaking hassle.
There was no way the larger magnet assembly was ever going to fit in the 500 cabinet. (yes I did mount from the front on the session 500,and from the rear on the sesson 400).
Thanks for all the advice. |

The way you have it now should be just fine. I wouldn't mess with it unless you hear something you don't like. When I had a Session 400, I would have loved to have a 1502 in it. The 1502 is my favorite speaker, with the JBL K130 taking a close second. The JBL is what was in the Session 400 I had. The 1502 is a little warmer sounding to me. I tried the JBL from the Session 400 in my Nashville 400, and put the 1502 back in. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) .
