| Since I deal with so many people that have "Old" or other type of guitars, I need some input on a "Custom" design that may be used as a Generic Fretboard. Many people don't like some of the present designs such as the Sho-Bud "Cards" symbols and some others . I am setting up to do some "Replacement" FB and need advice. Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works |

| Ed, I think a lot of folks (myself included) could use reproductions of Fender fretboards in various scale lengths, both for pedal and non-pedal guitars; and others who don't like playing cards or whatever might also be happy to use the Fender style -- plain and humble to some, perhaps, but a clean classic to the eyes of many. |

| Fender is one design I am working on.The artwork is almost finished. { I checked today} Most people seem to want 8 string but the string length varies. I probably will do 22 1/2- 24- and possibly 25 1/2 scales for now. I feel most people people want "Black" but I can do other colors.Ed |

Whatever design you go with, I highly recommend using the multi-color inlay/position marker design (i.e. Emmons, Derby etc)... really makes things a LOT easier!
How about using little pedal steels as markers
The most interesting one I've ever seen done, was on a custom steel, using stained glass, and the leadlines were the fret markers. Don't think I'd want that, but it was definitely a conversation piece. |

i'll agree w: the multi colour position marker
(such as Zum,Mullen,Emmons,+ Williams have)
i'd like to see Air Earth Water and Fire

Nickels, Quarters, and Dimes.
"Why"
"Nickels tip the waitress. Dimes play the Jukebox, and Quarters....."
Maybe Loonies, Shekels, Sackies, and Euros.
Religious Symbols. Maybe A Cross, a Star of Dave, A Crescent and a Moroni.
Monopoly pieces, a shoe etc.
Military ranks. Bars, Leaves, Birds, Stars.
Body parts. Ears Feet Eyeballs Hands.
Adult themes? Positions? ( nnaawww....)
Car symbols, Chev, Ford, Chrysler, Caddy.
Highway sign sillouettes, Stop Yield Speed etc.
Punctuations, @ # $ % etc
Animal prints. Dog Cat Chicken Rabbit.
Just getting started..
More apon future edits.

How about ta staff marker(I think thats the name of it)That "S" looking symble at the begining of the score. It could be tall and slim,different colors/sizes for different positions,like the Fessenden horns.

| Thaanks- these are some good ideas, keep them coming. I am working on animal and religious designs now. How about a "Semi circle at the edge in color like you would put a "temporary dot" to mark #3-#5 etc. Ed |

Whatever design you come up with, just please use very distictive, bright , flourecent colors for low light conditions and us folks with specs They sure get close together on the upper end.

| 35 years ago I experimented with a "Illuminated" FB but it never really worked out. Howwever with the new technology available I am experimenting with a design for "Low light" use. Unfortunately fretboards are only a small part of things that is needed in the Steel business.I accidently come up yesterday with an item that I get calls for all the time. Example "Ineed that thing that hooks in the "HOOTER". Ed |

Please consider turning your raised fretboard into a fretless wonder, and seriously consider my innovative jeweled upright, mounted along the front edge of your steel. Mounted on an angle, with trimline frets, it has become a virtue of permanency.

How about CATTLE BRANDS?
Fruit (Apple, Orange, Banana, Peach, etc)
Greek Letters (the Frat House look)
Greek/Roman Gods, didn't they all have symbols?
Weather symbols (sun, cloud, lightning, etc)
Signs of the Zodiac (Aries, Leo, etc)
Mathmatical? (+ = -, etc)
Chemical?

| You might take a lesson from Pual Reed Smith, something both artistic and successful. Paul's birds are accurate and identifiable. Very Nice. I like the religious symbols idea, but include Yin Yang with that one. How about South Eastern Native American petroglyphic designs: "the man in the maze", "kokopelli", etc.? |
