Neil Young Harvest album has a picture of one in the equipment lineup.
If that's what it sounds like it will be fine.
I've never heard one, but it sure looks pretty.

'All new electronics" ... "Boost for high gain" ... It only says the cabinet is a clone. It has nothing to do with the old amp. 2 6v6s in fixed bias for 18 watts. Guitar amp through and through. Sure looks good though.

At least they didn't use EL84 output tubes like most of the newer "retro" amps. Nothing wrong with EL84s but I think the 6V6 is more in keeping with the original 6L6 (not to be confused with the higher plate voltage 6L6GC that we're used to). The original cathode biased Electar would have been more like 10-12 watts though. I agree, it sure looks good and I hope I get to hear/play through one soon. |

I've owned one of original Century amps and its big brothers. This amp was designed and built by Nat Daniel, of Danelectro fame. He had a shop right across the street from the office I am sitting in right now, on Cortlandt St. in NYC. You can say he was a hired contractor by Epiphone.

I decided to buy a Skip Simmons PA amp. The Ephiphone look really good but I don't trust the new amp for the authentic sound and quality, with Skip Simmons I know I will have a quality amp with the sound Im looking for (40's, early 50's swing and Hawaiian).

All of the write-up on this reissue is about the look and not the sound. It might sound great, but I don't think they want it to sound like the old original amp. Too bad.
J-S, I hope you will post a review of the Skip Simmons PA amp after you've played it. Very curious. |

Sure, Im very exited about this! It will be a 15 watt with two channels, one for steel and one for dobro.
The steel channel will be very dynamic with a little breakup when pick a little harder, like a small Gibson amp.
The dobro channel will be clean, as clean as a little 15 watt can be of course!
I will use a cab I already have with a Weber 12F150 50 watt.
I will do a reviews and demo when I will get it. |

Looking forward to that. Will this be a rebuilt Masco, Bogen or what? Or built from scratch? Skip is very well thought of in the harmonica player community for his mods to these old amps. Hadn't thought about one for steel. |

All the schematics I find for the original show three 6SJ7 pentodes feeding into two cathode-biased 6L6s, with a field coil speaker. The new amp looks more like a hopped-up Princeton with a boost. It is a prime candidate to wait for on the used market, gut, and build something more interesting into it.

I have the Skip Simmons's Stromberg-Carlson model 32 amp for about 4 mount now, I done about 20 gigs with it and Im very happy!!
The steel channel is very nice, its stay clean until I push it very hard and is very responsive, like an old Gibson amp but with more clean headroom.
With my swing band the guitar player plug is archtop on the guitar input and I use the steel input, we play both together on the amp and get a very nice tone for swing, by the end of the night the amp get hot and we get a very beautiful tube overdrive, just a nice little breakup like Charlie Christian or Jules Ah See.
I really think its the perfect amp for hawaiian and sing music! Probably amazing for blues and jazz too.
I use the line in input for Dobro and its very nice too, since the amp just have a tone control I use an DI with EQ to boost the high and cut the bass and mid and I can get a very nice smooth clean tone and can push it close to feedback volume. Its a very handy feature for small bar or to have a monitor on stage.

There are some demos of the epiphone on youtube and they do not sound good to me.

| I haven't tried out the new Epiphone but two of my friends have one each and they have nothing but good to say about it. Ideal for lap steel and an archtop with either a floating DeArmond or a CC PU. |
