I purchased this guitar in November, specifically for a recording session where I needed to use two tunings throughout some songs. It plays and sounds great, stays in tune (for months), and is very comfortable to play in the lap. It performs well in the studio and on stage. I’m selling for a couple reasons: 1. My buddy and I are close to having our first homemade steels completed 2. a student recently gave me a freebie lap steel, so I no longer need this one 3. I don’t believe in hoarding. This guitar belongs in a better home where it will get more play.
Condition: This particular model lap steel (late 40s model precursor to the Iolana model) is a rare find and in very good overall condition. Various surface scratches, nicks, dings and dents throughout the instrument (but mild wear for an instrument of its age!). There are only two moderate sized dings on the guitar (see photos). Fingerboard and frets are in excellent condition. Some of the inlays appear to have been replaced. All electronics and parts are original and in perfect working condition.
Body: Solid body (mahogany, I believe) with rounded bottoms and two-point shoulders in pearloid finish covering. Bakelite control knobs and pearloid pickup covers.
Neck: Square necks with rosewood fingerboard, pearloid/sparkle dot inlays and a 1 7/8” nut. Second neck is raised slightly higher than the first. Slotted peg heads with nickel tuners with ivoroid buttons and nickel locking bars with “OAHU” indented on them. 23” scale length. The tuners all work really well, and hold tuning for months. No slipping.
Pickups/Electronics: Original single coil pickup on each neck with master volume and tone controls and a 3-way selector switch. These pickups must be an early string-thru design, with the top-plate magnet.
Pickup 1 (closest to player): 6.78K Ohms
Pickup 2: 6.52 Ohms.
Weight: 8lbs, 12.0oz.
Playability/Sound: The pickups on this guitar provide an excellent tone that can range from bright with plenty of twang and bite to mellow and smooth all with proper use of the tone control.
Case: Includes original hardshell case with brown tweed covering and dark brown stripes in excellent condition.
$700 shipped to lower 48.

Mighty nice. Here's a link to some great pics of Leonard Zinn playing a similar guitar in his early days:

Well that is a lovely little git, I sure wish I could own them all, dang. Alas, my teeth just conspired to suck up $2,330 and woeful gazing at hot pix will be this year's only excitement, I fear. But... in a (hopefully!) constructive way, I just wanted to... infuse the idea...; ummm, erect a background, tapestry/scenery/glowing-green-aura kind of zeitgeistal point(?) that the words "rare" and "vintage" can be like catnip round these parts. There's surely somebody here who can tell you just exactly how many of those were ever made, what day that particular one was made, what the weather was and what kind of toothpaste the guy who wired the pickups used. It's like landing on Expert Island, your boat sinks and there are 250 King Kongs and they all know more than you!
