Another "Who is the steel player?" thread....

Big fan of Johnny Paycheck/Donnie Young. I am really liking what the steel player is doing on this classic track. Anybody reference the man's name for me?
Much appreciated to each and everyone of you. Whether we agree on some things, or what our opinions may be, it matters not as we're all trying to get to that same place, or someplace, on this instrument. Thankfully, the scenery along the way is expansive and diverse.

Didn't realize Mr. Vest played on three of arguably Johnny Paycheck's biggest singles: * Only Hell My Momma Ever Raised * Take This Job and Shove It * Slide Off Your Satin Sheets
Those parts he played are classic and worm their way into your brain. |

| I don't know my fiddle players as well as I should, either. Tracking Singer's career is downright amazing, and purchasing the platters he is on would not be a bad way to fill out an album collection. To fill the shoes of Vassar Clements in Faron Young's band and have the next single shoot to number 1, well that isn't too bad a way to introduce yourself to the greater public as a young man under 20 years of age! and on through today. The man just sounds good. Thanks, Paul. |

Met Jim Vest in the late '60s playing with Pee Wee King and Red Stewart at Dorney Park in Allentown PA. Jim played very well on a Miller Custom steel. Very nice man and was gracious to let me sit behind it. I recall it had black-wrinkle end plates rather than the polished aluminum on today's guitars.

Hey Craig,
Learned something new! Never heard of the Miller Custom, or any Miller steel guitar. Some pretty great pictures out there. Being a pull-release player myself, it seems that at least some of those old Miller Customs were pull-release. I am guessing that the "black-wrinkle" material is similar to what Zumsteel's Stage One use on their end-plates?

| I remember seeing a picture of Johnny Paycheck behind Jim's steel. Jim also played on Vern Gosdin's "Set 'Em Up Joe" and in later years, he worked with Chalee Tennison. |

Hey Brett, yeah I remember that from the "Legends of Steel Guitar" videos. I'll play those when I'm a little bummed or something. I have seen them dozens of times.  |

Yeah, actually Roger Miller made nothing but Pull/Release.
Still have the one that I got from him in about '71.

Paycheck was a pretty fair steel player. So was Bobby G. Rice.
Anybody remember "You Lay So Easy On My Mind"? Backed him in Norfolk, VA in 1977. Bobby G. played my steel better than I did.
