Noise Gate/Filter

Good day...

I am "gearing" up my pedal board. I am new to lap steel (and loving it). I bought a practice-level Behringer volume pedal. I plan to invest in a higher-grade VP, once I am better at using one. The Beheringer pedal works OK, but the level of "hiss" it has added to my Vox amp is crazy. I want to get a noise gate/filter, but have no idea what is the best value on the market. Thought I'd poll the forum...what saye ye? What do you like and why? Thanks much.

Be careful with a noise gate. If you set it wrong, you can cut off the sustained note when it drops to the threshold point. I use a Digitech RP155, and had some patches that were noisy. So I added in the noise gate, played a gig and noticed my sound getting cut off when I played quieter licks/chords.

Is the Behringer a "passive" (not electric and just uses a pot) pedal. If yes, why would it ADD hiss to the signal chain?

The Behringer VP is active...I bought it new for $26. Just a student model-kinda thing. I am going to upgrade to a Goodrich passive pedal in the near future. Thanks for your info on the gate. Have a good day.

Every noise gate I've used or toyed with has given me fits with latency. If you're only getting it for knocking out the volume pedal hiss, I'd just get a passive pedal.
I don't think I'd spend money trying to overcome defects of Behringer gear: I'd live with it until it gets replaced. And pick louder so that you're hotter than the hiss.

Didn't know Behringer made an active volume pedal. Especially for $26. I may have to check into one for a cheapo backup pedal.

One might consider carefully the logic, wisdom, and ultimate outcome of adding more cheap components to one's signal chain specifically in order to compensate for the cheapness of one's previous component investments. If you can't afford a real pedal then deal with it until you can - there's lots to be learned with no amp or VP at all - but if you are spending money I would advise you to get a good small amp, a professional-grade steel guitar volume pedal and good guitar cables, make sure you have a decent reverb and picks that fit your fingers.

Then STOP messing with gear and start practicing the steel, don't' spend another cent on it except for strings and picks and gas to lessons and jams and gigs, practice every minute you can with every kind of music you can, and in a year or two you'll be better off for having done so.

I Have a Boss Noise Gate on my pedal board for guitar and I deck a Boss CS-3 Compressor for the sustain and zero on the attack. Pretty noisy without the gate. Works OK in this setup.

Try everything and Behringer is OK for low cost experimenting.

Didn't know you could still buy products that hiss.

If you add a noise gate, you'll probably need to add a compressor to overcome the noise gate. Then I would add a peak limiter to overcome the compressor. To follow that, I would get an Aphex Aural Exciter to bring back a natural, full, rich sound.

That $26 dollar pedal is getting to be pretty expensive.

Tom best thing to do is buy less and spend more in what you do buy. The old saying is, send crap in guess what crap comes out.. Ya can't fix crap with more crap, you just get more crap. Save your money. Steel guitar is about how beautiful sounds you can get from it. Those beautiful sounds come from a great steel guitar, great pick up, great player, great amp and effects with a great speaker set up. Great pedals also. Did you see cheap and hiss and needing gates to quiet the noise, no cause you should not need that. Buy quality stuff to get the quality sound you are after. A gate will only quiet the hiss noise when it is closed. Start to play and the gate opens up and guess what you got the hiss back.

Good morning all...thank you for the great feedback. I have absolutely had it with this Behriger pedal...signal hiss, uncontrollable "controls", ridiculous amount of pedal travel. It's just not what I need. I don't want to have to concentrate on my volume pedal while I am thinking about the right and left hand technique. (not to mention that I have changed over from a dobro-style tone bar to a bullet bar...what a physical learning curve) Next question...I love the Goodrich pedal. Before I buy, is there another volume pedal(s) I should consider that the forum feels will come close in quality at a better value? As always, I appreciate your assistance, experience, and wisdom. I think in terms of pedal quality, you can't beat the goodrich. For some quality, any pedal with a 500 K pot will do that job, but I really like the goodrich pedals and they are not too cheap if you buy them used, and it looks like it may be awhile before they make new ones.

It's not clear to me whether you already have a Goodrich Pedal or are simply close to buying one. They have been the "Old Faithful" for many years and they are of excellent quality. However, in light of Mr. Goodrich's present health and offering the company for sale, you may want to consider the new Stage One pot pedal. It's also an excellent pedal and gets top reviews here on the forum.
