Nice find, b0b! Still have a hand-written letter from Al Perkins, from way back when. _________________ 1979 MSA U12 Pedal Steel

Great stuff! The first (the two record set) of the two Manassas albums is still one of my favorites of all time - what a great but short-lived band.
Hillman has said in interviews that he learned a tremendous amount from Stills.
On a sad note, superb percussionist turned actor Joe Lala passed away last month at 66.
I was always amazed just how thick Al's hair was when he was young. _________________ Mark |

I didn't know Joe Lala had died. His every beat from that double LP lives in my head. My iPod shuffles the songs on that album and I don't know how to change it back. I anticipate the next track in my head everytime. He reminds me of Greg Brady lol _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe.

Damn...that "was" so sweet. Did a trade in a shop of my single 3X4 ZB in 1977 ...it's probably still around somewhere. I loved the Gretsch White Falcon in that clip too. I had a "Tennessean"...got rid of that too...you know, same old story, sell and later regret ...why don't they write songs like those in the clip anymore?? Give me the Country/Country rock songs of the 70's anyday

Really lovely.. One of my all time favorite bands.. Makes me sad to think how far music has degenerated..
Al is a long time favorite of mine.. He was right in the mix as one of the greats of the country rock era.. The "hippie steelers" as I call them . However, he never got the name recognition that B Cage, Rusty, Sneaky, or even Jerry got.. He was and is a wonderful steel guitarist that influenced a lot of us in a big way... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

I've seen this before, b0b, but I always find it worth listening to again. What a wonderful band. I believe that I saw them back then, but the details are a little foggy...being the 70s and such. _________________ "The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over." |

i dig it too. this was such a cool era for music and style. and the zb does have a super distinctive sound which i do attribute to the guitar even more than the player.
but let's get totally honest here. every time i saw stills turn back to let al take his ride, i expected to see steve's face cringe a little at al's pitch. steve's vocals are pitch perfect. al's steel, not so much. i always liked al's playing, like on the parson's grevious angel album. but it never quite measured up to the pitch and tone of what emmons showed was possible on GP.
lots of older memorable steel cuts had this flaw.
i listened to my favorite 'just destroyed the world' by conway last night and really noticed for the first time how pitchy john's steel was on that coolest of cool steel part.....especially the higher up he got....and then all is saved quickly as conway's perfect vocal comes back in. |

I think of singers when I think of pitch--some are great and are dead on, and others have issues with pitch that are compensated by an abundance of style and nuance. Buddy and Jerry Byrd and Joaquin did set the bar really high, but very few can have complete mastery over the instrument and then exhibit the musicianship and soul that they did. In the case of those who can't, I find slight pitch issues to be the most tolerable. I'd rather hear something slightly off-pitch, but dripping with soul/inventiveness/etc. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Chris, if you remember "Hearts On Fire". Do you also think that it was Al Perkins playing? _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

yeah joachim...just listened to it again on youtube. i think it's al. some good stuff. but you all know what i'm saying...spectacular pitch is only displayed by certain great players. this isn't perfect...but neither were gram and emmylou. we were all caught up in the heavy emotions of the time back then. at least i was. i liked it all alot.
i think al played that whole album. |

Chris, I was caught up in that emotion too. But except a for a couple of friends it was not appreciated much by other people, they mostly thaught it was weird.
There was only one german music magazine who greatly sympathised with this kind of music. The rest was Hard- Rock or mainstream, so I was pretty much an outsider.
I've seen Manassas, H,H&F and Emmylou. Halve of the audience were Americans somehow connected to the U.S. Forces. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |
