Hey all,
I recently bought a cool old Magnatone and the tuners will need to be replaced straight away. Anyone know what tuners i should buy to replace them with?

Ken,
I purchased a Noble lap steel (a rebranded Maggie) a few months ago, and it has the Kluson Deluxe three-on-a-side strip tuners with the clear Lucite buttons. They were so stiff I could barely turn them, but otherwise in pretty decent condition. Here's a pic:
I purchased a set of repros from Stewart-MacDonald

and installed them on the Noble. They fit the holes perfectly, although the Noble's headstock is thick enough so that the string holes in the tuner shafts barely protrude enough to be usable. They did the job, nevertheless.
I since have reinstalled the originals. After an overnight soaking in naptha, a generous dose of 3-In-One oil, a few hundred spins, and a shot of petroleum jelly, they loosened up to the point of being serviceable.
If it's just the buttons that are a problem, they can also be replaced fairly simply. Stew-Mac has a variety of them.

I used the 0111 cream buttons to replace the crumbling originals from the Kluson Deluxes on my 1950 Supro Supreme. While restoring the original Klusons, I also temporarily installed the Stew-Mac repros on the Supro. They fit perfectly.

I have a 50s 8 string walnut Magnatone in excellent condition including the tuners. However they are the individual Klusons, and are too close together. I can hardly get my fingers between them and some are very hard to turn.
In a few weeks I'll have a new 8 string Melbert built Robert Allen. He's making it from curly maple, finished in red chestnut. I'll ask him to post pics when it is finished. |
