Can someone explain to me how the lower return springs go bad. I have 2 on my Carter that don't hold the finger when I raise the string. The finger always bounces back into position and I can't hear any audible difference, except the click as the spring pulls the finger back into position.
These are pretty stout springs and they don't get stretched very much. I swapped on with the spring on the half stop, and it cured the problem. I ordered some parts from Al Brisco, and have some springs coming.
I just don't understand how the little bit of stretching can make then weak. These springs are probably used in many applications where the springs seldom go bad.

| Hey Richard, over time certain springs will become weak and lose tension. I have a 2002 Carter and have had this issue at least a half dozen times. I don't know which strings you're having issues with but lower you're E's and watch the spring on the 4th string. It moves a considerable amount. Now multiply this several times a day over many years. You get the idea. If you want a fix before Al's parts arrive, cut off a coil of the spring and reattach. Keep repeating until the spring holds the finger to the stop. Good luck! |

Mine are on strings 3 & 6. Only string 6 gets lowered. I've done the cutting coils off the spring before. Not fun. Easier to just replace it.

I think springs are tempered through a heat tratment process, probably incorrect metallurgy or tempering is why they would stretch. If its under tempered, they will stretch and work harden, if they're overtempered, they will get small cracks in them from 'fatigue' and the cracks will cause them to lose stiffness.
This said, all springs will stretch or break if they are pushed past their design point...the smaller the wire and the wider the coil, the more stretch they have, obviously, tightly wound heavy gauge ones don't stretch much at all. |
