I wonder what the general view is on Rascal Flats admitting they were lip synching? At least when they told Alan Jackson to do it in 1994, he told the drummer to play without his drumsticks. I am amazed how they renamed late 60's and early 70's rock and now call it Country. Wasn't Keith Urban and three drummers reminiscent of that era? Yes, times they are a changing or are they?

My issue is I would rather hear a live performance than a previously taped version of just about any music. I understand the need to do it in the early days of broadcast, but now! Why even have the performers there?
Last year I was amazed when I went to see a name band, and low and behold here were all these great guitar licks but no lead guitar player? The point I departed is when a song with a steel part was played with steel, but not a steel guitar in the house.
So I guess the President is not the only phony out there. Maybe I just expect too much, but they should have to make it known.

If I am not mistaken, it has been reported here more than once (by those who are there) that all the music and most of the vocals on these shows is pre-recorded. Why single out Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban? RFs has a steel player. And if you ever listen to a Keith Urban album you will learn he is a smoking Telecaster picker.
I like Rascal Flatts and I think it's an age thing. I am 55. I love the good shuffles they play on Willie's Place and on the Texas labels. I remember hearing this when I was pre-school. They also play a lot of junk on Willie's Place for my ears.
Lately I find myself really digging the "old music" on Prime Country XM also. As for what's on radio today, its not for me!. I'm not saying it's bad or not country, it's just not for me. Once you get to that age...... 
I'm gonna go hook up with Alvin Baine and listen to The Fruit Jar Drinkers and The Crook Brothers now. That's REAL country music.
Sorry if I drifted and ranted....

The musical abilities of the artist never were called into question. My issue was live performances being presented as live and are not . I personally have never seen a disclaimer to that fact. Of course I don't accept lip synching the National Anthem as right either. I would rather hear the talent have pitch issues. I am a fan of people not machines and technology.

I agree Neils, it's a shame to present something as "live" when it's not....simply false advertising regardless of who it is. I would bet this happens far more than we know, even at concerts.
When was the last time you heard of a "headliner" cancel or postpone a show due to illness? I remember that happening fairly often 20-30+ years ago but I don't remember the last time I heard of that....maybe the newer "superstars" are just healthier!

When Whitney Houston passed away two years ago there was a lot of talk about her "greatest Live performance ever" at Super Bowl XXV in 1991. What they Didn't say... she was lip-synching to a track that she had recorded one week earlier in a studio in California. A lot of Super Bowl performers have done that, and I can understand why considering that 100 million people are watching. What surprises me is how many people don't know about lip-syncing, or maybe they just don't care.

| I have only been able to consider "Rascal Flatts" as a comedy group for a while now. Just their name is kind of a giveaway, don't you think? (Is it likely that a band called "Florida Georgia Line" is going to be better? "Lady Antebellum?") What permanently re-listed the Flatts boys in my mind was that they released a video in which their lead "singer" apparently flashed his butt, thereby making them controversial? He's already fat, and butt-ugly, with his clothes ON! If this is the scariest thing Nashville can come up with I'm not real worried. |

Well said Bill Cunningham, I also like Rascal Flatts, and evidently what they are doing is selling, and has been for several years. How many CD's have all of you detractors and insulters in this thread sold in the last few years?

Not quite what I was alluding to Barry, Rascal Flatts has probably sold millions of CD's, and made a few more millions from touring, I don't see anyone posting here that has done that.

I think it depends on the setting. A live event on TV in front of millions when the production team is trying make sure there are no glitches, and it is a one shot deal, I don't have any real issue with it. It was certainly the way ALL music was performed back in the day when we had things like American Band Stand.
But an actual concert where I'm paying money to go hear the band? That is an abomination. |

I may not dig their style,but,those Flatts boys are real deal talent,and they have paid their dues ! They are not products of "studio magic"! BTW, it was the guitar player that flashed his backside in a video,and at that time it was pretty controversial for country music.....just sayin'

Some of my favorite records are rock from that era. None of my favorite records are modern country. Today's country records don't sound like real musicians playing together, communicating with each other. Instead, you hear a well-crafted cut and paste job compressed until almost all of the music is squeezed out of it.
Neils, if you have examples of classic rock that sound like Rascal Flatts and their ilk, I'd like to know what they are. I don't hear any similarity at all.

David, it was the lead guitarist who "flashed his butt" not the lead singer, who in my opinion is one ugly dude... As far as their music, he's a pretty good singer and the guys are good musicians as well but they mostly don't play what I want to hear so I don't buy any of their CDs at all.
As far as lip synching goes, I wish they'd have had George Strait (one of my favorites) lip synch his part when he did "the Fugitive"... Maybe they'd have used a little "pitch correction" as ol George was definitely off key a lot in that performance....JH in Va.
