With the "Bolivar" sign, it looks like this could have been in the Ozark Lakes area of Missouri?? |

I don't believe that is Johnny Winter; this is a picture of George in the early 50's.
This picture was taken on the stage of the City Auditorium in Houston; George played there several times, that's a fact!
The steeler could be Herbie Remington; he was around at that time (I'm for sure about that)
George played at a club called "Shelleys Ballroom" a bunch of times which later became "Gilleys".
George had a friend that was in the military by the name of "Daryl Edwards"; the two of them wrote a song called "Why Baby Why" and went on to be big hit. Later on Daryl wrote another great song for George called "Seasons of my Heart" was another big hit. Daryl also wrote a song called, "Funny forgotten Feeling" that given to a blue singer by the name of Brooks Benton that made a big hit; George didn't sing that one. I was around when these things happened; Daryl lived in Galveston and George was there a lot. Daryl died some years ago, he has a son by the name of Sonny Edwars, a great guitar player, lives somewhere in East Texas. Lost tract of him; Sonny could tell you a lot stories about those days. This is my story and I'm stickin' to it. |

Jack,
The Bolivar sign hanging on the curtain was the "Bolivar Fishing Pier" in Bolivar, Texas across the channel from Galveston. |

I only know that Johnny Winter played for Jerry Lee Lewis, before he (Johnny) became famous. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

That may be a steeler by the name of JD something. Maybe Somner or something like that. He played a lot with Floyd Tillman and also the Houston auditorium show.
BB
The bass player looks kinda' like Harlin Powell,,,but I think Harlin was more in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area if I remember right. _________________ If you play 'em, play 'em good!

This is how I originally saw the picture posted on Facebook. I crossed out the women's name who took the photo as I don't know her.

Cool photo.
Johnny Winter was from Beaumont, too, so wouldn't have been that surprising. He would have been 18 in 1962 and was definitely playing gigs then; he had a record out that was a local hit when he was in high school.
There's a detailed biography of Winter out called "Raisin' Cain" that's pretty interesting. He tells a story about his band opening for Jerry Lee Lewis in 1963, but I'm almost positive he never played in Jerry Lee's band.
No mention of his playing bass on a local show with George Jones in the book. Or of playing bass on any gigs I don't think. |

Here's another picture of Johnny Winter circa 1962.
Sure looks a lot like the guy backing up George Jones, tho' I may be wrong.
It's happened plenty of times before!
Still curious about the steeler with George in the original posting, too.

Appears that Johnny's New Years Eve gig in '62 also featured little brother Edgar on alto. |
