Could someone explain the purpose of this lever. Especially what strings to use the first string with. Thank you _________________ LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN GEORGIA |

Conversely, I don't have this raise. Someone please tell me not to worry. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

First and foremost, with your A & B pedals down, it gives you an A7 chord. With strings 4,5,8,10 (any 2 of those and the G note, you get an Em. I use it a lot in some "bluesy" type licks. I have this lever, but don't think it is a necessary lever. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . With strings 5-2-1, you have an augmented chord. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

I use it a lot for playing melodies (with thirds) up and down the neck.
E + G = min 3rd
E + G# = MAJ 3rd |

You'll have more fun if you raise both of those F#'s to G#. |

I also raise 1 to G#. Use it more that the F# to G lever, and that is not very much. But they are there if I want them. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I'm with what Richard posted.
I guess if you just play country scales all the time and no blues scales you wouldn't need it.
It is so easy to use on an up lever contra to the AB pedals - you can even 'bend' with the lever. _________________ Priebs GFI ('09)Short-Uni10. GFI ('96)Short-Uni SD11. ('86)JEM U12

That change is ok but its limited on its own.. Raise string 1 a full tone.. You can use a "feel" stop at the 1/2 tone point, but there is no need.. In no time at all you will be able to hit that 1/2 tone perfectly.
I have never had a feel stop on that pull, and always get a perfect G.. _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

IMHO, the best use of the lever and the A pedal is that it gives you the first inversion of the E chord at the 3rd fret. So:
open: E
3rd fret A+F: E, first inversion
7th fret A+B: E, second inversion
It give you a pocket around the 3rd fret:
A+F - E,
open 5th fret - A,
open 7th fret - B,
etc.
plus the A7 mentioned above. It's discussed in the Winston book. _________________ Jack Aldrich

Jack, you seem to be talking about the "F" lever--the one that raises strings 4 & 8 a half step (to F--or E# for the purists).
This thread is about the lever that raises strings 1 & 7 a half step. |

Ron,
I started out with a raise to G from F#, and the dom 7ths were really great, but recently I tried the whole step raise on 1, coupled with the lower 6th string by a half step. That allows me to do some licks I couldn't do before. But I still hankered after that half tone raise on 1.
So now, like you, I have a half step feel stop and get the whole tone raise if I push on through. Best of both worlds.
Nobody mentions the nice scale passage you can get with A & F when you use the half step raise on 1, played together with the 2nd string. That's worth having. _________________ Williams 700 series keyless U12,

I have the 1st string raising to G#, along with raising the 2nd string to E and lowering the 6th string to F# (and split with B pedal).
I have the 7th raising to G with the same knee that lowers the 2nd string and lowers the 9th string. |

I tried using a half stop (feel stop) on string one, but I need to hit that G note really quick some times and the feel stop wasn't accurate enough. The sam with the feel stop on my 2nd string. I took the feel stop off, made the knee lever on the 2nd string lower go all the way to C# and put the D note on my 2nd left knee left. That way I can have a positive, in tune D on string 2. My lever that lowers 2 to C# also has a resistance that happens around the D note because of 2 other changes I have on the same lever. I can use that when I want a quick D note on string 2.
