I have an opportunity to purchase an older Peavey Special 112 amplifier, possibly for a good price. It appears to be in reasonably decent condition.

It has a Scorpion speaker, according to the plaque on the grille cloth. The serial number 00-065214XX is printed on the tag on the lower back panel.

Can anyone tell me when these amps were manufactured, and if they have any applications for pedal steel. Would the stock Scorpion speaker be okay, or is it inappropriate for steel?

I'm looking for a smaller amp just for jamming with the boys in our basements or family rooms. Is it loud enough and powerful enough to cut through the mix when playing with bass and drums?

Could the Special 112 possibly be a poor man's alternative to the more modern Nashville 112. Is there anything I should be aware of, or beware of, in checking out this amp? Any ideas of what would be a fair price on one of these amps?

Would one of these in decent condition be worth $100.00? $200.00? I plan to test it over the weekend, and if it sounds okay I may make an offer.

Jack...If the amp in question is the first issue in the 'Special' series ( followed by the '120' & '130'), surprised that no one has chimed in. These units are very acceptable for use in pedal steel applications, but I would recommend changing the stock speaker (Scorpions are not ideally voiced for steel guitar). A BW 1201 or 1203 should work well, but will need to be an 8ohm I believe (check your stock speaker to make certain). With that in mind, the $100.00 to $125.00 range would be about right IMO.

The Special 112 is rated for 160 watts at 4 ohms and 100 watts at 8, so a 4 or 8 ohm speaker would be fine. Two ohms is not recommended. I have a Special 130 that I put a BW 1203-4 in and it works fine for steel.

David N, from my research of the Peavey archives, the amp appears to be the second version of the Special 112 circa 1994. It has a stock 4-ohm Scorpion speaker.

Dave O, I had read your posts previously. Thanks for your recommendation to revisit them. Great info, and it's one of the reasons I decided to check this amp out in person.

Howard, those specs appear to be a match for the amp in question. Seems that either a 4 or 8 ohm speaker would work. Your 1203-4 suggestion sounds like a winner. I love the 1501-4 in my old LTD 400.

I schlepped my little GS-10 to the auction house this morning to run the Special 112 through its paces. It seems more than adequate for my purposes, even with its stock Scorpion speaker. The amp is in dead mint condition, everything seems to work just fine, and for what it's worth the original footswitch is also included.

The amp will be auctioned tomorrow evening. After passing my inspection, I fully intend to give it a shot... wish me luck!

Jack, if you ever decide to upgrade the speaker, and don't mind spending more on the speaker than you did on the amp, I recommend the Eminence EPS-12C. That's what I put in my Special 112 and really brought it to life...160 watts of clean pedal steel sound.
