Hello, I have entered the exciting and dangerous world of the PSG.
So... For this humble start, I have purchased a Carter Starter. I have been able to tune it and adjust the pedals and knee levers. (The DVD I bought promised me I'd be playing like a pro in a week....not too good yet, but it has only been 5 days, maybe I will make it).

Anyway, the Carter Set up manual has the knee levers labeled:
F LKL 4th and 8th strings From E to F;
D lKR 4and 8 from E to E flat;
X RKL 5 from B to B flat;
E RKR 2 from Eflat/Dsharp to D.

Some tab I got for E9 had the DE and F levers changing to different notes such as:
D lever dropping strings 2 and 6 from d# to D and 6 g# to. F#. Just trying to get some insight on this.
Is the Carter set up for standard tuning? Not sure if there is such a thing in this world...I thought it was but maybe it is dangerous to assume anything about so versatile an instrument.
Thanks,
Gary

There is NO standard for knee lever labeling as there is for the 3 floor pedals. Although, the F lever is pretty much accepted as the name for the lever that raises the E's to F. For following tab, find out which of your knee levers do what the tab is doing and change the labeling on the tab to match your levers if you can't do it in your mind "on the fly".

Your knees are fairly common. There is no standard convention on the names of the levers, unfortunately.
Here are a bunch of common changes, in descending order of universality (notice I'm not naming them):
Es to F
Es to D# (I put it 2nd because Jimmy Day and Lloyd didn't lower 4)
2 to D and/or C# many combine it with lowering 9)
1 to G (some raise 7 to G, some lower 6 to F# on the same knee)
5 to A# (many lower 10)
1 to G# AND 2 to E

Notice I have 6 entries and most guitars have 5 knees. We all have to balance stuff.

Thanks guys, so far so good. I understand.
So I am thinking if you buy tab that you need be looking at what the particular tab indicates the knee levers are doing and find that drop, etc. if I am set up for it.

I tend to like to use slants so the string drop is doing something similar..
Sounds like some neat possibilities.

Gary, sounds like you bought the video from Scott Grove. We love to make fun of him here on the forum for his absurd claims and lack of skill. But, you are on the forum - best 5 bucks you ever spend, at least for pedal steel guitar.

Richard - I've got some tab that calls your "F" lever (E raised to F) the "D" lever, but no doubt this was done by another wannabe player/instructor... some guy named Buddy Emmons.

Doug,
Actually I was also being facetious about the video.
But it is a heck of a lot of fun.. I am under no illusions about the practice needed to get this to muscle memory and you are right that the forum is the best investment I have made.
I have many more questions than answers and the forum is and has been a great resource.
Thanks!
Gary
