Topic: How to: Supro p/u in phase w another p/u? |

I know that the old Supro/Valco/National string thru pickups are made so that they have one coil for each of the three bass and treble strings. This means that wired to another pickup half of the strings will be out of phase and half not. Is there a way, w the limited wires on a vintage Supro p/u, to wire it so both sides can run in phase w another pickup (old Kent acoustic p/u, also one lead and a ground I think) without changing the phase relationship of the two coils of the Supro or the sound of the pickup?

Best way is to hook it up and see if you like the sound.You can always try different combinations.

You might be able to use a Super Switch or some other switch to reverse phase on half of the Valco after it leaves that position... no other way I can see unless you find another split pickup (Fender P-bass?) to put against it. Or a combination of switches... a DPDT to revese one half of the Valco, and another normal pickup switch. Or... find another Valco pickup. That would be interesting... you could switch them so that you could have bass strings on neck, treble on bridge... or reverse of that. Good luck!

This schematic by W. D. Turner shows the pickup coils in series. If the wires are accessible, and neither has a wire connected to a common ground, you can simply reverse the connections to one of the coils, using a small SPDT switch.
If this schematic is accurate to the guitar, The volume pot is wired to place a varying load on the pickups. Additionally, I would expect the effectiveness of the tone control, to change with different volume settings.

Here's how I'd put the phase switch with DPDT... I'm curious as to how you'd do it with an SPDT, Craig.
p.s. I'd be very suprised if this drawing were correct WRT the volume and tone. Looks like Craig's found it in error!

Would you believe I was going to use the switch to energize a DPDT relay?
I didn't think so.
As usual, Stephen's switching circuit is correct.
