Fender 1000

What do folks think of this axe in general, and this one in particular?

I have a 400, and except that the pedals are sorta clunky and the end tuners need a screwdriver and a miner's light to adjust, it's kinda cool. Andy Volk says Leo Fender was the Henry Ford of guitar builders. Is this, like, a Model A?

That looks pretty cool, and it's probably worth the $650 "buy it now" price for an accomplished player looking for a vintage sound. I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner, though.

Fender experts: Are those the original pickups? I never saw a Fender with pickups like that before.

I have never seen pickups on any pedal steel
such as those on the 1000 on e bay.

There were changes made from the orginal block dominoe Jazzmaster style..but I have never seen those before.

Possible that the owner was able to somehow exchange the black pickup covers from the later model which had the dominoe block type pickups.I dont know

I have seen these pickups on later models, so far as shape and being on an angle..but never
saw those exact pickups on any stock 1000 or 2000 for that matter. Never saw the white pickup covers,,those may have been custom made or covered with new covers,.

This is not an original Fender 1000. I purchased one of the first sunburst Fender 1000's in 1960. The pedals were stamped and chrome plated. The finish was sunburst, there was no clear maple finish on the guitar or even available at that time. As I recall the top perimeter of the body did not have a radius but was a fairly chrisp right angle. This guitar has apparently been customized or perhaps a later pilot model.
Further, those early Fender Pedal guitars had wooden pedal bars and the neck shape was routed from the body and were shaped much like the Emmons, Sho-Bud aluminium necks are today, not tapered from the keyhead to the canger such as Sierra, Carter, and MSA.
The front neck being higher than the back neck. and the pickups were, as I recall, black. The pictures are limited in number and clearity, but it does look like some good craftsmanship went into modifing this guitar.

Its not a 1000 this guitar has 10 strings per neck and the frets I have never seen before. This guitar has been modified and not
by Henry Ford. It may be an Edsel.

This is a 2000 guitar that has been modified.

The fretboards seem to be from a Fender PS 210.

Rainer, you are correct. Those are PS 210 fretboards.

I emailed the seller of the instrument. It belongs to his Dad. Right now he does not know about the modifications until he asks his Dad about them. He assumed it was just an original Fender 1000. He did say that it still has the old cable mechanics underneath. Too bad whoever modified it didn't go ahead and make it a rod pull guitar!

There is nothing correct about this ad or this guitar I can see other than the quantifiable... 10 strings, 8 pedals and 2 knee levers. All the rest of the claims are pure bullsh*t.

Also, I've rarely seen photos as dark and non-revealing as those in this ad, including those auctions that only show photographs of the rear side of the steel being advertised.

Doesn't look like anything I ever saw. As much time as I spent in Leo's Lab. in Fullerton CA. I never saw anything that looked like it. White pickups were never offered and were never slanted in the way that photo shows.When Gene Fields was working on the PS2 it was keyless.The heads look like possibly old type Fender patten heads but that's about all. As someone else said, photos not very detailed, but it ain't no 1000 or 2000

I don't think this guy is trying to fool anyone. He is merely mis-informed about this guitar. He obviously doesn't know much about Fender steel guitars. He also isn't a good photographer.

You guys are right on all accounts...nothing original about this one! This is a 2000 with PS210 Fretboards. It's been refinished, and the pedal-bar is certainly not Fender's. The pickups appear to be very old Sho~Bud items. It's not a "collector's item", by any stretch of the imagination.

It is, however, worth every penny of what it sold for! This is the best guitar ever made to develop tunings on. No other PSG can be set up or changed faster. Period!

(And...it sounded pretty good, too.)
