Topic: What alternate tuning can I use with strings of a C6 set? |

I got an 8 string multi-kord 4 pedal "chord changer" with a set of C6 strings on it. It really doesn't function well as a fluidly moving pedal steel.
What I would like to do is play it as a C6 lap steel with no pedals and then use each pedal to change to a different "open tuning" to play lap style. Kind of like having 4 open tunings in one. I thinks thats the only way one could rationalize playing this thing!
Any suggestions for tuning ideas for each pedal (that sound decent) would be appreciated. I can't find much information, let alone fresh ideas, on this beast.

What I was going for, specifically, was the 1-3-5-8 arrangement on the top four strings, so as to make an instant (har har) transfer of the open six-string slide guitar repertoire I've spent the last 40 years or so learning. Yes, one should learn to skip strings, yes one should adapt... But I'm talking the difference here of playing steel guitar instead of slide, right now, in a band - for, even, (gasp) MONEY! Whoa. It is imperative that you copy this chart:

It's for a 22" scale pedal steel, but the gauges stay peachy all relative to each other - like if you goose 'em all .003" one way or another, it'll work.
Cut and paste it! Print ten! Put one on the fridge, on the bedroom wall, in the shower! etc. My G6th tuning above got weak gauge-wise in the middle. I remember I dug up a few 30-somethings from my string morgue to prop it up, but I don't remember exactly which. One good goose from the G6th above is to lift a E or two up to F, and/or lift G or two up to A's. |
