I went to the Station Inn this evening to see my old mate Mike Johnson, with his band 45 RPM. Oh my God, they were superb. 5 great singers topped off by the simply awesome Daryle Singletary. Mike's brother Mark and wife Joanie both featured on vocals, but the drummer, fiddle player and lead singer (all whose names escaped me) all had marvelous voices too.

This band is very entertaining and for those who love the more traditional country music with steel, fiddle and piano then they fit the bill perfectly.

Mike was as immaculate as ever, and his tone (as you would expect) was full and rich. Mike just oozes enjoyment as the band plays. Greg Galbraith is someone who I have seen many time on YouTube and heard on record but never had the pleasure of seeing live. He is so tasteful, never over-playing and always striving to play exactly what each number requires. If only all lead guitar players were as considerate as Greg.

The young lady on fiddle was on fire sometimes, and didn't hold back when it was her turn to play a solo. Each member of the band knew exactly when not to play, and when to come in. Although they don't play together that often, the band is tight and comes across as well rehearsed.

I have attached some pics of the band. Any of you guys visiting Nashville really should check out 45 RPM. They are, without doubt, the best country band I have ever seen. Mike was playing his Emmons red devil guitar

The fiddle player is Jenee Fleenor. She started out playing fiddle at steel guitar shows, then she joined Terri Clark's band a few years later. She's been on fiddle recently for Blake Shelton in recent years and has also played fiddle with Martina McBride. Mike's played steel on a lot of great records!

I was there tonight too, and everything Ken says is spot on. I catch them as often as I can.

The other singer's name is Jimmy Melton.

Mike did tell me that he really missed the Dallas Show this year, and is hoping to make it next year. We are going to try to hook up for lunch next week, and I am going to meet up with other friends while I am in town.

Mike has 10 pedals on that Emmons of his ( he has 2 more push pull's at home ) and used every single one of them. He has 6 levers and no verticals that I could see. He was using a Peavey LTD amp, and it sounded really good. No honk whatsoever.

Malcolm - you would have loved last night. Winking

Hi guys

Roy - I wish you were here too mate. You would just love it and it has been one endless round of steel guitar. I am off to Steel Guitar Nashville shortly, but I am not expecting to catch Mr Seymour there. Take care Roy.

Quentin, I think that 45RPM have been playing at the Station Inn for a few years now. I will ask Mike how long when I see him next.

Charley, 45RPM play once a month at the Station Inn, and I was very fortunate that their gig co-incided with the time that I am in Nashville. I wouldn't miss this show for anything. I paid $12 to see their show, and £55 for Friday night's Opry. I know which will be the most enjoyable for me. I would have paid $112 to see 45RPM and still felt that I got value for money. The Station Inn is predominantly an acoustic venue, mainly bluegrass, but they do get the more quieter electric bands in. The venue is tiny with an incredible atmosphere.

Ken, thank you so much for the great post and for coming out to see us.You are a great musician yourself which makes your compliments even more special. Hope you can come back again.

I'm so proud of this band, 45 RPM. It's a tribute to the great country records of the 60's 70's and some early 80's. We play lots of solos, play lots parts (w/ fid, stl, & gtr), and have lots of fun! It's a big sounding 8 piece band. I get to play some of the instrumentals from my cd's too.

We try to play once a month, but the dates sometime vary a bit.
Please just check The Station Inn website if you are coming to town. (Stationinn.com) or 45 RPM on Facebook.

Come see us.
(Thanks Pete for your kind words too)

Here is the link to the Station Inn calendar.
http://stationinn.com/index01/calendar/

I forgot to add - in addition to all of the great playing and lead vocals, these guys have wonderful harmony vocals.

My friend, Germany's Manfred Schall and I were sitting right in front of Mike, alongside a whole table of foreign steel players. We both agreed that out of our whole trip to the USA, that the 45RPM/Daryle Singletary show was without doubt the highlight. I am just sick that I am not around on the 18th April when they next appear at the Station Inn. Sad

This band could play just about anywhere, and with the right exposure could become massive. They would go a storm in Europe, playing the type of material that they do. I mean REAL COUNTRY, not pop rock.

I think Daryle is one of the best singers I've ever heard. I'm so pleased that he's still active in Nashville - when I met him a couple of years ago (I was playing in a support band at one of his gigs in FL) he told me he didn't currently have a record deal.

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Hopefully they will be playing at the SI when I come up in May. Greg is probably one of my very favorite Guitar (Musician) players and little know he can also play the steel. Mike has put together a top notch group and this has to be the Nashville Spotlighted place to be once again.

Glad you got home safely Jerry.

Paddy, I went to see the Time Jumpers tonight, and out again tomorrow night at a gig. I have been asked to sit in with a band, but passed on that one. I might spoil any reputation that I might have over here. Mikey Johnson has the best tone of any steel player that I have heard since I came to the States on 11th March. He is a real tonehound and the closest that I have heard to him is yourself in the Telonics room. Now - about that fiver you owe me. Laughing Laughing Laughing
