I just want to thank Greg Jones for the great job he did in restoring my 1965 (we're pretty sure) ZB D-10 and to HIGHLY recommend him to anyone else who needs help bringing their ZB into tip-top shape. When Greg told me I could shave in the endplates, he wasn't joking, and all of the metal is shiny enough to make you put on your shades. But the work he did on the undercarriage was just phenomenal! I'm not sure the guitar played this good when it was new! Greg is an absolute whiz when it comes to ZBs -- an impressive wealth of knowledge and meticulous attention to detail. After refinishing the undercarriage, he even put the sticker from Sonny's (Curtis) Guitar Shop back on! He also did a wonderful job of setting up my Mullen D-10 a year or two back.
The only thing I wouldn't let him do was refinish the lacquer. I just like to see those years in the finish -- and it's not like it's a wreck or anything. In fact the finish is still in fairly decent shape -- lightly relic'ed.
This guitar was originally built for Sonny Curtis and Greg and I had the pleasure of reacquainting Sonny with it at the Lexington, KY, show. A real pleasure!
As I told Greg, I think my Mullen, lovely axe that it is, will be sitting in the case for a while. I am having an absolute blast playing my ZB again! I've had this guitar for 32 years and now they might just have to plant it with me when I go.
Thanks again, Greg. What a super job!

It just doesn't get any better than this if you love ZB's. I had mine out tonite at an awards show and the rock musicians were awed by it. Way to go John. |

Thanks John, I am glad you are happy with it. This particualr guitar had some special attention when it was born. Zane picked out choice wood AND castings. The castings were some of the best I have seen on ZB's.
I had the pleasure of taking this guitar to Renfro Valley for a test drive. Not only was it a pleasure to play, but it sounded awsome to my ears!!! Of course YOUR knee lever set-up was a LITTLE odd for me, I still had a blast playing it.
You should be good to go for another 32 years if ya can still pack it!!!!
Got some more pics to send to ya.

Thanks for the comments, Larry and Kevin. You guys know what a pleasure it is to play one of these and after Greg worked his magic, you can multiply that times ten!
My band had rehearsal last night (we're opening for Junior Brown Saturday) and they were knocked out by how gorgeous it is.
Greg, as soon as my computer at home is working again, I'll send the pics from the show. Thanks again, bro.

Wow, gorgeous! John, I don't remember that guitar being so beautiful?!
Question for Greg:
Regarding the history of ZB's, I recall back when I lived in LA, around 1968 I think, I went into a little music store on Lankershim Blvd. down the street from the Palomino Club and saw a really early ZB, quite used, that had welded bellcranks/crossbars and a painted undercarriage like the Sho~Bud Permanents. I asked Red about it (he was playing a ZB at the time), and he told me to pass on it. My question is, have you seen any of the really early CZB's like that? I know Zane worked at Sho~Bud for a time.

Herb,
I have never seen one of those in person. I have some pics of one like that though that popped up on e-bay about a year ago. From what I gather, they looked like a cross between a ZB and a Sho-Bud. This guitar also had a Pedalmaster Decal on the front apron. It had ZB endplates, keyheads, pedals, and fretboards. The undercarraige was a dead ringer for Sho-Bud permanent.
If I remember what Tom Brumley told me, he got the 1st ZB that Zane built. It was only single raise and lower. Tom told him he needed to make a few changes, the guitar wouldn't stay in tune well for one. It was also Tom's idea to have stainless changer fingers. He still has that 1st guitar now.
I met David Jackson a couple of years ago and he spoke very highly of Zane.
Thanks for the compliments folks!!!

Herb, you probably don't remember it being that beautiful 'cause it wasn't! I mean it always looked pretty darn nice, but nothing like it does now. My steel's so bright, I gotta wear shades!
Ricky, thanks a bunch for posting the pics. Once I get my home computer working over the weekend, I'll post some from the Lexington show.
