Topic: Slipping Leg insert - My Fix |

One of the legs on my 32+ year old Franklin has started to slip. I've tried suggestions I found such as expanding the gap on the clutch split insert without luck.
I have an old 70's Radio Shack mike stand with a 5/8" insert, like the steel legs. I tried the clutch insert from that and it didn't help, the leg insert still slipped with very little pressure. Out of a whim, I inserted the 5/8" shaft from the mike stand and used the original steel leg clutch insert and it tightened up and didn't slip.
I considered cutting a piece of the mike stand insert but before I did that I decided to reverse the steel leg 5/8" insert and "magic" the leg now tightens up and holds. |

You can buy replacement Atlas clutches.
You can buy both the split fiber insert and the brass collar for something like $1.25.
Or you can spend $2.00 on baling wire and chewing gum.

Jack, I'm a little confused: When you say that you
decided to 'reverse the steel leg 5/8" insert', do you
mean that you turned it 'end-for-end' or do you
mean that you took the Radio Shack part back out
and put the original back in?
Whatever way, what do you supposed was the
difference, as far as the clutch was concerned?

You can also clean the leg insert and clutch parts thoroughly with denatured alcohol and they will stop slipping.

Russ, I did turn it "end for end". I got that idea after trying the 5/8" shaft from the mic stand.
I tried the mic stand shaft with the clutch assembly from the steel guitar leg and that tightened and didn't slip, which meant the clutch was OK. I had considered cutting a piece of the mic stand shaft and using that, but luckily reversed the steel guitar leg shaft and it worked. |

There is another approach to a slipping clutch - a dowel. I put dowels is all of my legs to keep them from slipping.

| Hope it's related enough not to be a hijack....I have an Atlas mic stand that's missing the thing you turn to tighten up on the inside shaft and hold it in place-can't think of what it's called.Anyone have a source? |

If you have a computer you can google atlas mic stand parts. Atlas sound is the manufacturer and supplier of parts.

All of mine were slipping. The front 2 would stop because of the pedal bar. The back 2 would slip to bottom if I put any pressure on the guitar. I marked the place where I wanted them to tighten and took them apart. After cleaning with alcohol, I wiped the shine off the leg with 400 grit wet and dry sandpaper. I spun the leg in the paper so the grit grooves would provide something for the compression ring to grip. If I ever decide to adjust the leg so that area shows, the sanding marks will polish out(400 grit does not make much of a mark). Haven't had a problem since.

And they do supply replacement parts-usually you have to special-order things like a clutch assembly.Today I called I called National Speaker here in Denver expecting a long wait,but the guy had one-it'd been sitting on the shelf for thirty years.I'm an old-school guy and I'd always rather fix something than just throw it away...Chris,thanks for helping me get my thoughts channeled.It all worked out. |

Steve, yeah. I just wanted to post what I did so someone else with the problem would have another option. I tried all the fixes that were posted on this forum and others and they didn't help. The clutch obviously was not the problem so replacing it would have done no good. |

Don Burrows here on the Forum sells the two inner rings for about 9 bucks. Atlas wants a fortune. If you mean the outer collars, he probably sells those, but I didn't price them.

| When I first started looking for a fix, I did a google search for the clutch assembly and $16 was the cheapest I found. Fortunately I didn't need a new clutch assembly. |

I just checked again. My prices were wrong.
The brass insert is 27 cents.
The split fiber collar is 81 cents.

Chris,
Is that online somewhere? If so please post a link.
All I could find (on the Atlas Sound site) were Clutch Kits.
Nowhere could I find the split rings nor solid retainer
rings available individually.

It is found at perhaps the third link in a google search.
I found my parts first by Calling Atlas sound and asking for the specific parts I wanted. But it is there on the internet too.
