I find that I know the words to a lot of songs that I have never sung. I guess from sixty five years of backing the singer I have retained a lot of words to the songs.This goes back to the forties...
Kind of strange to me...

I used to sleep anytime, any place, all thro' the night. In recent years however, I seem to wake up just about every hour.
While attempting to get back to sleep, every song I use to hear as a kid come racing thro' my mind. I can sing just about every Cowboy Copas, Red Foley and Eddy Arnold song from that era as well as many of the pop favorites of that day.'
And yet, I can't remember what I had for breakfast
this morning. |

Willis, I used to know lots of words but now, every time a learn a new song, I forget 3 old ones.

Same here! In my case, it has nothing to do with being a musician, as I remember the words and melodies to songs, jingles, TV-show themes, and commercials from long before I ever got involved with music.  |

My Problem is... I can remember the words to many "50's" Songs - but don't remeber what I did last Tuesday!!!

I often joke that I was playing steel for 5 years before I noticed that the songs had words. But seriously, to this day I don't know what most of the songs are about. I hear melodies, grooves, chord progressions, etc.. I don't pay any attention to lyrics unless I have to sing them.
One exception: when I hear the word train I play a train whistle.

I know many songs from the sixties: Small Faces, Kinks, Yardbirds, Animals, Byrds, Lovin Spoonful, Moby Grape.

| The most aggravating thing about remembering song lyrics, is when your singers have to find a song in a book 6 inches thick. Songs they have done all of their singing life, but on the bright side, it gives you a chance to learn the kickoff if you know what you're going to sing. Willie SIMS. |

I've played bass a lot longer than I have attempted to play steel, but I developed a habit years ago of concentrating on chord patterns (now it's numbers). I've paid very little attention to words of songs. Even now when I'm just a speckletater I'm thinking numbers constantly. Don't know if that's a gift or curse!

I guess I'm like b0b! I hear the vocal as another instrument, and I never am aware of what the lyrics are. Heck, I can't even remember song titles! "Jb, it's the one you start doing doodle doodle." I'm completely an instrumentalist. It's how my brain works. |

| I don't know a lot of the words, just mainly the hook of a tune, if that. I concentrate on the progression and the instrumental break. Of course, when backing up, I listen to the phrasing of the singer, but, not the words per say. I don't need to know the words because I'm not singing the song. But, as said before, I'm expected to know the intro, chords, break and out, when the singer is using a songbook to read the words from. Simply amazing! |

| I can't even remember words to songs that I've written. But, I can remember the tune to about any song I hear, have heard, or played in the last 50yrs. The words, just never hit home for me, but the sound of those guitars, is what lit my fire. AND IT STILL DOES. |

That's neat Bob, I do the same thing. I've even had some of our people that come to our Opry show ask me if there was a train song on show and if it was they were coming.
