I'm looking at buying a used RI Twin. The seller tells me that the pilot light sporadically fades in and out. He claims that it's an easy fix and just needs a new bulb, but I'm inclined to think it may be something a little more than that. What do you guys think?

all of the Fender reissue amps do that and its certainly not the bulb. I had a brand new one backlined for me a few years back and it was doing it. Still had the tags on it.

Just a quick thought on those amps… if Fender can't get the light bulb right, what about the parts of the amp that are actually complicated?

There's simply no quality control over there

Well I've not had a peek inside of the reissue Twin Reverb. But if that amp is a PCB version of the old point to point Twin Reverb and a brand new bulb was fading in and out...my first question would be:

"What's wrong with the power transformer in there?"

Checking the schematic, there's nothing that would cause that, except variations in the line voltage, or a bad connection where the transformer plugs into the PWB. The lamp is powered right off the heater tap secondary, and that should be very stable after the tubes warm up.

I'd suspect the bad connection, first, causing the problem, and just remove the chassis and clean and spray all the plug-in connectors. Like the molex ones Peavey used, they often cause intermittent problems. Confused

I have had this issue on reissue and original Fenders, new bulb fixed it every time. Cleaning the areas where the bulb makes contact would probably do it as well.

I just had this problem on a '72 Deluxe Reverb I bought recently. A new bulb cured the problem I guess, but I ran a small screwdiver in the socket (unplugged of course) and scraped the + contact and rolled up some fine sandpaper and twirled it around to clean the - contact. Then I replaced the bulb. No more problem.

I've rebuilt several 65 Reissue Twins power supplies.
It's not really true to the original 65 design. Once rebuilt using high quality components they sound great.
I use FRD's instead of the regular diodes in the power supply which seems to make a difference in the tone of the amp. I have not run into the light issue at all.
