| I have a stereo power amp that is quite clean on both channels but lacks power !! Is it possible to use one side as a preamp and run that side speaker output into the second channel input increasing the power output of the second channel to a speaker ?? I'm asking before I try it !! Would this work or blow up the amp ??? Thanks for any help or advice !! olde geezer - AKA Eddie "C" |

NOPE!!!! You can't do that and yes it will blow your amp and possibly anything else attached as well...including YOU!!!
What is the power amp? Most can be bridged to run one channel at twice the power but most also require an 8 ohm load when bridged so if you're running a 4 ohm speaker it may overheat. Some are ok with a 4 ohm load like Stewart's. It should say so on the power amp. Do you have the preamp output level up all the way?

Are you using a preamp? It will be very quiet if you plug straight in! We need more info to help you better... post the whole system config.

Some Stereo Power Amps have a switch or wiring scenerio available to "Bridge" the power amps for more (double) power, making it a Mono Power amp.
You would have to tell us the Brand/Model in order to know for sure.
If you Bridge to Mono, you could then also lower your speaker impedance to get more headroom (wire your two speakes in parallel instead of series). |
