I hope friends and fans of the great Julian Tharpe will enjoy hearing him again via my dropbox link. I was fortunate enough to visit him in January 1978, so here're 360+ minutes of his playing with the Beau Mundy Express at the Fuzzy Duck, Gadsden AL 18/19 January 1978, as well as him talking about his tuning:

I'd like to thank his son Greg Tharpe whom I met and befriended during that visit for allowing me to share these gems. I've also got an interview that I have to dig up … somewhere.

Wow, Graham, what an extraordinary treat! I'm listening right now to this true master and I've never heard him in this context.
One of the most well-rounded players I've ever heard, head to head with the best. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

I believe that Julian, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, did his speed picking with his thumb and index finger as opposed to thumb and middle finger. His playing, IMO, is very distinctive and easy to recognize. IMO, one of the best. |

I heard, long ago, that Julian was killed by someone. If this is true, did they ever find the perp? If this is false info, someone please correct me. Thanks in advance. |

|
|
Charles,
Julian did all of his speed picking with his thumb and first finger.
Julian was robbed, hit in the head with a hammer, and was in the hospital for 6 - 8 months in a coma. Julian eventually went home, lost his hearing and I believe most of his sight. A year to two later he died from complications.

Such a sad story.
Julian was one of a kind. Thanks for the memories. Julian was a personal musical hero of mine. His style of 'reckless abandon' on single string stuff just kept me on the edge of the seat. Then he'd mellow it out with his gorgeous no-bar rendition of Danny Boy.

I thought Julian was the best steel picker I had ever been around. As much as I enjoyed his picking, I enjoyed his friendship more. I miss him.

Once at the old MSA place with Bud Carter and the crew, Julian was playing...I turned and looked at him and he said "What...?" I replied that something there didn't sound right and he said words to the effect..."There is no wrong !"

Wow, this is great - the playing completely overwhelms any technical recording issues. I was traveling the last 10 days and internet was sketchy (to say the least), just got a chance to download these. His handling of a huge range of material in a bar band setting is breathtaking, and makes a great advertisement for steel in any popular music style. |

I've been busy and have just viewed all the appreciative comments about Julian. He was Zane Beck's favourite player and I visited him after spending 3 months with Zane and his family. Although it was a brief visit over two days, I'm now really glad that I chose to tape record rather than photograph my travels. |

Saw Julian in St Louis in 73 or 74 at a Scotty's doins. He was with Barbara Mandrell's band. He played Danny Boy in the key of E with
his left hand in his lap the whole song. Got every note and chord. _________________ 2006 Zum D10 8x8,1969 ZB Custom D10,
