Saw this first on the HSGA site and it's a rare treat to see such a great trio again. This was filmed during the years they had a decade+ long run at Waikiki's famed 100 year old waterfront stage, House Without A Key.
Rhythm guitar/vocals, Mr. Hollywood, Sonny Kamahele
Bass/vocals, Mr. Hawaiian Music, Benny Kalama. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benny_Kalama
My first 20 years on Oahu I never sat foot in Waikiki but finally went strolling along the beach and discovered these guys, made it my evening habit for years until they retired the band. |

Thanks so much for posting this, Ron. These guys are hot enough to melt Lake Superior on this ten below zero morning. |

And he's still at it. The islanders today are: Alan on steel, Gary Aiko on bass, and Kaipo Ah Sing on guitar. He's my "kumu mele" and a good friend. You can see him most Thursday evenings with the Keawe Oahana at the Moana Terrace, Waikik Marriott. He's also the leader of the Maui steel guitar festival, weekend of 4/10/14 at the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel, a "must go to" event, IMHO. _________________ Jack Aldrich

Great show! Enjoyed it immensely.......
It sounded to me like Alan was using a 'small amp' and his playing at times put an overload on the speaker giving it that unique sound of early day steel guitar distortion. I couldn't tell what type of amp he was using.
Lot's of right hand exposure clearly showing a most relaxed and agile right hand, not the one that is so prominent these days with the familiar little finger protruding out in front like it's been broken or whatever. |

That video was made back in the 80's. Greg Sardinha told me that, of all Jerry's Hawiaan students, Alan "got it". He's even better today. _________________ Jack Aldrich
