For sale is a 2002 Fender Standard Fretless Jazz Bass in "Very Good Condition." This is a great-sounding and great-playing fretless bass. It's got a few nicks and scratches on the back and sides (see photos), but it has far fewer nicks and scratches than the Fender "60s Jazz Bass Road Series" guitar!
http://www.fender.com/series/road-worn/road-worn-60s-jazz-bass-rosewood-fingerboard-3-color-sunburst-4-ply-brown-shell-pickguard/
The Fender "Standard Series" is made in the U.S.A., and you can get the specs on Fender's website, here: http://www.fender.com/series/standard/standard-jazz-bass-fretless-rosewood-fingerboard-black-3-ply-parchment-pickguard-no-bag/
It's functionally in excellent condition. In the twelve years that I've had it this bass has retained its original setup from the factory very well, and I've never even needed to adjust the truss rod once. I'd love to keep this one in my collection, but I need to make room for some other gear. I'm including a nice Fender hardshell case and the wrenches that came with the bass when I got it.
I'm asking $500 or best offer. This guitar retails at most stores for $599 new, and that price doesn't include a hardshell case. If you bought this bass and a hardshell case brand new it would cost around $699.
I'm having some trouble posting photos at the moment, but I'll get some posted soon. |

Okay, it seems like it would be easier to simply direct people to my Craig's List posting in order to view photos: http://richmond.craigslist.org/msg/4358481292.html
If you're interested and you learned about the guitar through the Steel Guitar Forum make sure that I know that so that I can be sure to send a donation to the Forum if I get a sale from it. Thanks! |

The "Standard" Series is built in Mexico, not the U.S.A. The Fenders made here, are referred to as "American Standard,"
Still a GREAT bass, and a good price. I bought a Chinese-made "Squier" fretless J-Bass, several years ago, that was about 250.00, with no case at all.
This bass would be mine, for 500.00. |

Well Stephen, thanks to you I've learned something new about the Standard Series. I must say it's pretty misleading of Fender to print "Made in the U.S.A." on the headstock and "Fender Corona, CA" on the bolt-on neck plate if the guitar is actually made in Mexico. I guess Fender is saying that the neck was made in the U.S., but the guitar was assembled in Mexico. That's pretty silly.
Anyway, as Stephen says, this is a great price for this bass and a hardshell case despite the made in the U.S./MIM confusion! |

Kerry, the Mexican "Standard" series says "Made in Mexico" on the headstock. Yours looks like an American Standard. And a ridiculously good deal. |

If I'm reading the serial number right, I get the following from http://www.guitardaterproject.org :
Guitar Info
Your guitar was made at the
Corona Plant (Fender), USA
in the Year(s): 2000 - 2001
Fender: Corona
Corona factory was opened in 1985, Corona California, with major guitar production starting in 1987. With the addition of a custom shop in 1987 the plant currently employs about 700 workers. Apart from general and Custom Shop Fender instruments and amplifiers, it also encompasses Guild acoustic & electric guitars.
$500 is a good deal if you are a fan of the Fender Jazz _________________ Mostly junque with a few knick-knacks that I really can't do without! |

Walter, the Serial Number is Z134168. I got the same manufacturing info when I entered that serial number at the guitardaterproject.com site. So...I guess this is an American Standard, which means I'm going to have to re-think the asking price.
It's been over a decade since I bought the instrument, and I simply didn't recall whether I purchased an American Standard or not. I hadn't seen any American Standards in tobacco sunburst with a white pickguard, and since I knew that Fender made some Standard Series basses like that I just assumed that I must have bought the Standard Series. Although the headstock said, "Made in the U.S.A.," I thought that there was more to the American Standard Series that separated it from the Standard Series than simply being made in the U.S.
I guess I'm going to re-post this ad as an American Standard with a slightly higher price tag. |

I apologize, for any confusion my earlier comment may have caused. I was confused, when I read this, from the O.P.
"The Fender "Standard Series" is made in the U.S.A.,"
As I said, this is not a true statement.
And this, ALSO from O.P, "I'm asking $500 or best offer. This guitar retails at most stores for $599 new, and that price doesn't include a hardshell case. If you bought this bass and a hardshell case brand new it would cost around $699."
Is not a valid statement either, for ANY U.S.A. made Fender instrument.
Guys, we all make mistakes. MY mistake, was not looking at the craigslist ad. I didn't look, because I'm not interested, I've got a bass, and I can't afford 500.00. So, Mr. Pippus, I don't need, or appreciate, your sarcastic criticism.
And Kerry Hutcherson, I'm not real crazy about your sarcasm, either. The fact is, had I not posted regarding your erroneous post, you would have lost money.
Ohh, me. Try to help somebody.... |

Hi Stephen,
As long as the effort was to help, I don't think anyone will fault you. Personally, I didn't read a lot of sarcasm in this post, YMMV.
I hope this doesn't stop you from trying to help others some of the great strengths of this community are tolerance and a vast wealth of knowledge amassed by the collective here.
Carry on Sir.
Kerry, good luck with your sale, I hope we've been able help you with the value of your Bass. Nobody likes a good deal more than me, but I hate see anyone taken advantage of. _________________ Mostly junque with a few knick-knacks that I really can't do without! |

Hey Stephen,
I'm sorry that you thought I was being sarcastic toward your comments. I was genuinely trying to thank you for teaching me something about the Standard Series. After re-reading all the posts I can see how you might have taken what I said to be sarcasm, but it wasn't meant that way at all. Unfortunately, written communication can be misleading in that way. Anyway, I endeavor to be a respectful and courteous Forumite, and I do genuinely appreciate your comments.

No sweat, guys. Walter, you did your homework, without any editorial asides. I didn't do mine, since I didn't open the Craigslist ad, as you did. My statements concerning the "Standard" vs. "American Standard" lines, are true statements. I will stand behind that, 100%. Same with the pricing. Over nearly 50 years of playing, and reading, about guitars, have helped me, I I posted those statements, not to hurt Mr. Hutcherson's sale, but intending to help. As Mr. Hutcherson pointed out, there is a great difference in saying something face to face, and writing it down. Obviously some misunderstandings took place, and I apologize to any and all, who were offended by any of my posts.
It is a good bass, and if I had the money, and the need, it would be on its way to South Carolina.
Thank y'all. |
