Your opinions on the loudest bang for buck out there, including used stuff... hopefully used stuff, actually. I just need volume, not fine tone. I have that already.

I don't know but I would love to find one that could compete with three or four Martin flat tops _________________ GFI SM10 3/4, 1937 Gibson EH-150, 2 - Rondo SX Lap Steels and a Guyatone 6 String C6. Peavey 400 and a Roland 40 Amps. Behringer Reverb Pedal. |

The loudest I've heard (and I have one) is the Republic Tricone, which is a Chinese copy of the National Tricone, and it's not all that expensive. |

A new RedLine Rambler is $995 -- killer guitar, worth much more (I have a Rambler Deluxe, which is definitely loud, but also has a very full tone). A used RedLine would be an incredible value IMO. I haven't played the Beard Gold Tones, but they get a lot of love, so they're definitely worth checking out.
Check the SGF classifieds or ResoNation or the Reso Hangout to see if there are any used resos that fit your criteria. Someone is always GASsing for an upgrade, which could give you a great deal on an instrument. _________________ Peter

Thanks, all. Keep the good ideas coming. I'm attracted to the Republic Tricone. Several of my customers have bought Republic instruments and I've been impressed. The only downside is my friend and often music partner Bob Armstrong is one of the great Tricone players around and it's kind of intimidating to play the same instrument. But, I can live with that. I wrote Republic an email yesterday, hoping to find a second. -- My current resos are 30s Regal Dobros (3 of them.... one has to go) and a 30s National Trojan. All great in their way but none with the cut I sometimes need.

Regal RD-40 used on ebay $112. Beard Legend cone $80. Beard maple caped bridge inserts $15. Beard nut ?. Sounds louder and better than Gold Tone reso set up by Beard |

Sorry but I really disagree, I have a Regal that I upgraded with a quarterman cone and a Beard spider and bridge and it sound a lot quieter and duller than my Beard. My Beard is around 30% louder and sound 200% better. |

That may be the understatement of the year so far (but it's only March)!
Seriously, the loudest reso I've ever played is an old National 12-fret Duolian with the heaviest bronze strings imaginable. It just barks, but some may consider it somewhat harsh and nasty sounding compared to a properly set up tricone or Dobro. |

If they are set up correctly, the Goldtone PBS sounds pretty loud, and impressive for the price. _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9

The loudest inexpensive resonator I've ever played was an old Fender F hole model I had did some setup work on. I'm not sure why it was so loud and I've played MANY guitars, but it was a very loud guitar. Some of the Regals also had good voicing with a little setup work. _________________ http://mckennaresonatorguitars.com/ |

I'm pleased you know Bob's work, Jack. He doesn't toot his own horn much, so to speak, but he's one of the greats. And lately he's started playing lap steel again so it's a whole new world. |

And Jack, my Nat Trojan is really loud also, but Bob calls it "branky". It's not hi-fi like a Tricone. Kind of all bark and no bite. |

If you can find a used Melobro (fiber glass) for sale at $1000, I would go for that...it's the loudest dobro that I have (and I have more than a few)......I call it "the banjo slayer"...... |

I don't disagree with any of the previous suggestions, but I wonder if you have considered a Wechter Scheerhorn? Great bang for a buck. Joe |

I don't know what style of music you're using it for, but if it's volume you want for around $1K I would look for a Deneve large body cat's eye model. I've played and owned a boatload of resos, and for the money you can't find a better made or louder instrument. You might contact Dick and see what he's got. JP Johnson's guitars are real loud too, but a little more money. |
