| I saw an ad for the Carter Starter in the latest Musician's Friend catalogue. I don't recall ever seeing that before. Does that mean steel guitar has hit the mainstream, or is my long-term memory even more eroded than I thought? |

| MF used to carry both the Carter Starter and the Sierra Artist. With the demise of Sierra, I guess Carter ought to see an uptick in starter business... |

Just curious, does anyone know how well these Carter Starters are selling? The quality and the price should help a lot more people get started on steel.

MF has had the Carter in there for a while, that's where I got mine, about two years ago. The Sierra used to be there, but disappeared for obvious reasons.
Can't speak to how well they are selling, but I do have one. The quality is so-so, but you get what you pay for. It got me started until I finally got a Zum about a month ago. HUGE difference, as could be expected. I finally got fed up with the crappy tone and playability issues. BUT, I wouldn't be playing now if it hadn't been for the Starter in the MF. I'm pretty convinced I live in a PSG vacum here in central CA, that Starter was the first PSG I ever played.
Just remembered as I just got spamed from MF, the also have a bunch of string, brass, and bluegrass instraments now. I don't think they're being specific to PSG. Of course you can't go play a Carter Starter at Guitar Center, which is the same company. Lawrence, not only have I seen it in MF for a while, I was looking to test-drive some ancillary gear on my lunch hour at Sam Ash here in Midtown... they had Carter Starters in stock there! I was pretty surprised. I'm not a huge fan of the place itself, but it sure shows how Carter's philosophy is perhaps paying off for them, as well as for steel guitar as a whole. (In Carter's case, I wonder how many Starter players go on to buy a new pro-Carter, out of those who replace the starter instead of quitting in anguish)  |
