Write up by Mark van Allen in quotes "Dark Brown Laquer Clark Custom D-10- wood necks built June 1973 and originally owned by famous steeler J.D. Walters (per builder Jim Clark). Laquer body and aluminum in great condition. Two three-pole hum bucking pickups with coil split switches for each neck work perfectly. Guitar at standard height, includes extra full set of pedal rods 1" shorter. Grover tuners, hard case in excellent condition. 8 pedals, five knee levers including nice vertical working the C6 neck Copedant: standard Emmons A, B, C pedal setup on E9 with LKL raising string 1 F#-G#, LKR lowering 2nd string D#-C# with beautiful solid tunable half stop, RKL raises 4 & 8 E's to F, RKR lowers 4 & 8 E's to Eb. Standard C6 pedal setup with RKL raising string 4 1/2 step, RKR lowering string 3 1/2 step, and vertical raising string 6 1/2 step. Mechanism tight and solid for a vintage guitar, ready to tune and go!"

Sonny can be seen playing his old Clark with George and Tammy on several Hee Haw episodes in the season that RFD is presently airing. Matter of fact, one is playing tomorrow. You can't get much better of a demo than that!

Sonny is a fairly regular participant at the OSGA jams. I just saw him last Saturday,he's always a hoot to talk to. He still has his Clark but he retired it a few years ago and is packing an Emmons LD III these days. I nominated him to the HOF a couple of years ago. After his work with George and Tammy as well as playing on Pacheck's first hit A-11, I feel he is very deserving....maybe I just didn't write a good enough nomination form....

That is a fantastic looking guitar, and the YouTube video certainly provides a great testament to its sound. If I had means and the need for a C6 neck, that sucker would be mine.
Dustin, that is pretty dang cool that you get to talk to Sonny Curtis! He is very deserving of a SGHOF slot. The man's contributions on those great Musicor recordings as a Jones Boy/Country Gentleman stand up right there with Emmons, Drake, Myrick and all the great steel players that passed through Studio B with Jones and/or Wynette.
I'm sure your nomination can only further the man's profile in the historical context of the steel guitar, and country music in general. Certainly one of my top 5 favorite players. Those melodies and sounds have a singular character that is easily identifiable, no matter whether he was on a Bud, a ZB, a Clark or Emmons. The more I learn on this instrument, it becomes more evident how difficult and rare it is to develop such a unique style and touch. He's the man! |
