( yes, Buddy is a sore subject...we all know this. But he did great stuff on steel. I would never live my life as he did, back then.....but he still did a lot for steel players ).
Peace. _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

Buddy was one of my heroes back in the day..
I sat hour after hour, day after day, copying every lick and nuance from his playing that I could muster..
His licks were a great inspiration to me for years, until I started listening to the guys HE stole licks from, and i realized there was more to the steel guitar than the opening phrase of Panama Red... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Bob,
I really agree with your comments. I am a huge fan of Cage, although I don't subscribe to the NRPS/Buddy Cage way of life. Nor do I condone the lifestyle of the grateful dead. Drugs have ruined too many people...& killed so many, as well. The "hippie" culture had it's positive elements, but the dangerous drug use, was a huge mistake!
Many took acid...& it damaged them forever. I've never been into LSD, etc. one drug I was scared of!! I don't even understand the desire to "hallucinate." The human brain, was not intended for such carelessness. Just look at 3:30...& on. Need I say more? It's kinda sad & disturbing. It was the times (the 70's & 80's)...but many took things too too far back then.
Anyway, these days, I listen to more of the Nashville type pros. I love to hear a steel player, play it sweet, beautiful...& with a great deal of emotion. That's how I "try" to play the Pedal Steel Guitar these days. I love hot licks...but playing smooth, tasteful, accurately...with emotion, is the REAL DEAL for me.
Thank again, Bob _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

At around 6:00, is when Buddy starts his solo. The Les Paul gives him room then. Starts off with a phase shifter/envelope filter...then he turns on the Boss Tone, & has a rockin distortion sound. He does a great hard rock solo here.
It is Pedal Steel Guitar, but before & after...is Allen Kemp (of Rick Nelson & the Stone Canyon Band). He's a great Les Paul rock player. Allen is not with us now (RIP, Allen), as he died of cancer. Same for John Dawson. He died of cancer also...only around a month apart from each other. Strange. Spencer Dryden has passed away too, from cancer…but he's not playing here. Sad. Buddy has cancer now, & is still touring with New Riders of the Purple Sage. I hope he beats it!! Multiple Myloma. I believe he had a stem cell transplant. That helped out, a lot. _________________ David "DJ" Rupert
