That's pretty cool - you should buy it, even if it sounds crappy you could hang it on the wall.

I've never seen a volume control knob in that location before.

...much less a volume knob the size of a dinner plate.
Very cool guitar. Looks like something a Martian would be playing, or shooting, in an especially bad '50's sci-fi film.

the same knobs can be found on German radios..actually there a few lapsteels around in Germany. Most of them are Framus. Unfortunately the sound is pretty crappy. Most of the cheap american made budget lapsteels I played sound much better. I think Germans are well-known for their microphones but pickups are not their cup of tea (the exception would be the Hofner "Beatle " bass).
But anyone interested in good quality and cheap 50s-60s archtops should shop over here. You could even find carved top blondes for under $300. Okay here I go off topic..but stay away from these steels !

Tele,
I wanna hear more about those "carved top blondes". Are they guitars? And what do you get for the $300? Is that $US?......

yes, I'm talking about guitars, however if you're looking for just blondes, they can be had for less than $300.

Framus, Hopf, Hofner, Roger, Lang and Hoyer built some very fine guitars over here back in the old days. Some of them (Lang, a few Roger and Hofner)are highly sought after, even in the USA.

but every now and then you could find one that surely can compete with the best L-7 or Epiphones for US$300...like I did. A guy in Japan bought it for $1300 at ebay

more and more off topic..
