I have 2 lap steels, a '64 Airline, and a '58 Supro. They both have the same pickup.

I use the Supro a lot and have it tuned to E6. I'm noticing that the 3rd (C#) string lacks the output and snap of the other strings. I thought that it may be the string gauge I'm using but my Airline does the same thing.

I tune the Arline to Open E or E7 and the third string sounds just plain dead compared to the others.

Any help is appreciated

The E6 strings on the Supro are

.10
.14
.17
.17
.20
.30

The Airline has

.13
.17
.26
.36
.46
.56

I believe the pickup polepieces are adjustable on those. There should be little holes in the top plate of the pickup which allow access to the polepieces. You'll have to remove the pickup cover, if there is one, in order to see this.

Either raise the polepiece for the "weak" string (or lower the others) to get a good string to string balance and a tone you like. Don't raise it so high the string hits it when you're playing). Be gentle; sometimes the polepieces don't want to budge on an old instrument - don't force anything.

Thanks.

I'll look into that.
