I'm about to fit a Deusenberg Multibender to my RK Lap Steel, I've been advised (on the SGF) to fit a roller nut to minimise the chance of string breakage. I couldn't find a suitable nut anywhere... (the only one I could find was a 43mm made for Strats. etc.
So I made my own today, and it was so easy, I thought I'd pass on the details.
OK, take a piece of aluminium, the same thickness and width as the original nut (so it'll fit in the slot).
Cut and file if needed. The height should be about 10mm
more than the final height required. Now mark out the slot gaps on the blank, in a straight line but at the height of the original nut. Now use a punch to guide the drill and make six holes, big enough to allow a brass guitar string ball end to fit.
Now carefully cut across the middle of the holes.
Then using a hacksaw blade and a file, make a slot along the top that will house a tiny round rod. ( I used some left-over pins from my pop-rivet gun)
Clean and smooth all cuts etc. Put a drop of super-glue in the slot between each ball-end space,
slide six ball-ends onto the rod and drop the rod into place. If any super-glue gets into a ball-end, rest a soldering iron on the ball-end until you can free it. One picture is worth a thousand words, I've attached two pics, that should explain all!
