I am very excited about a new CD project I played on from Rhonda Vincent! It’s titled, “ONLY ME”.

I’m sure many of you have seen Rhonda on the “Country’s Family Reunion Shows”, singing stone country songs. I personally put her in the same category as Tammy Wynette, Connie Smith, and Patsy Cline. What an amazing singer. She loves “real country music” and even more importantly, she loves “STEEL GUITAR”!

Rhonda’s new project contains 6 fantastic country songs. They’re done right, with 2 and 3 part fiddles, upright bass, great electric guitar and piano work, an actual country drummer and - STEEL GUITAR for days! I have a part of every intro and solo on all 6 songs. She jokingly tells people the CD should be named “Mike Johnson” with special guest, “Rhonda Vincent”. (I don’t know about that, but you’ll see that she’s not afraid to turn the steel up!)

Rhonda is well known for her incredible Bluegrass Music. She has won countless Bluegrass awards and continues to be one of the hottest acts in that genre. The other half of the project contains 6 bluegrass songs with her amazing band, “The Rage”. Even if you aren’t a huge Bluegrass fan, you will love the beautiful vocals and incredible playing.

Many of the country music listeners have moved to Bluegrass Music because it has the heart and soul that we all loved from artists like Ray Price, George Jones and Merle Haggard. Rhonda and Gene Watson recorded a great country duet CD a while back. It has done so well, that Gene has been appearing at some of the biggest Bluegrass festivals in the world with his full band - and Bluegrass fans are loving it!

I think you will enjoy “ONLY ME”. If we show our support for Rhonda wanting to record this kind of music, hopefully she will do more in the future. Hopefully this will encourage others to follow suit too. I am pretty sure most of us would love to hear and play more of the of country music we love, again. Thanks.

I have just downloaded this fabulous CD off Itunes. Mike your playing is, as usual, inspirational and spot on. The other bluegrass tunes are great as well. 'Beneath Still Waters', has some of the most beautiful steel work i have heard to date. I would highly recommend this CD.

Mike,
No doubt about it; Rhonda is a country girl with an edge and she is country gold, and your playing is the other side of the edge...
Are you coming to Dallas this year, is so, don't forget the bass player.
I'll be at the Rittenberry booth again this year, try to stop by; looking forward to seeing you...

Thx guys, I'm so glad you like the CD! Rhonda let me put the arrangement together for "Drivin' Nails In My Coffin". She had already recorded it in her Bluegrass style, which was great. We did it more along the lines of Ernest Tubb & Johnny Bush; pretty much "Western Swing". Tim Crouch just slayed the fiddle parts on it. James Mitchell played an awesome solo on guitar too. It was fun to play.

Hey Tommy A,

If Mike goes to Tx this year, or any other place or year, I'm pretty sure he won't forget the bass player. I just hope he doesn't forget the drummer.

I met Rhonda at Dollywood in 2012 and in front of the crowd she said, "Brett, my steel guitar playin' buddy!" She loves that I play steel guitar too!

Mike, I was going to make a thread dedicated to your steel and Rhonda's singing on this but instead I will bump Very Happy

Sweet and pure, man I love it and every time I listen to it I want to know WHY I can't hear this and other artists like this on 'country' radio, CMT, etc etc. Dammit!!!

But back to the topic at hand, thanks for a great record Mike, and everything else you do. I'm lovin' it!

ETA - If y'all haven't heard it, it is the best recorded Pedal Steel you have heard in a long while, definately worth the price of admission. I just wish there were more songs. Very Happy

Hey Malcolm,

The mini-concerts in the ShowPro room were to me, the most fun all weekend. Main stage show is great, but I really enjoy the smaller, off the cuff type settings. I worked a show in Alabama with Mike and Joanie last week, and as always, a bunch of fun.

Also, I was at Rhonda's CD release party a couple weeks ago, and it was incredible. I know, it's strange, a drummer liking bluegrass, but Rhonda has been one of my favorite singers for a long time. And now with the real country stuff she's doing, well, it's just hard to describe how good it is.

Best CD I've heard in long time.

Rhonda tried (with not much success) to be country back in the 1990's. Check out her 1991 album "Timeless and True Love". It is half bluegrass and half country. Really tasty picking by Scotty Sanders and Sonny Louvin too!

Hey Bill,

You're right, that was really a good album. Maybe now, with all her success in bluegrass, and so many people wanting to hear real country music, the timing will be right. I sure hope so.
