Well I was looking for a Stringmaster, but found an immaculate '55 Dual 8 Professional instead. Any hints/tips about using it? (I'm aware of the potential tuner problems)

Mikel,

Since the fretboards are not raised for playing clearance as they are on the Stringmaster, you may want to cut a piece of pickguard material, (the type used on acoustical guitars) and install it from about the 18th fret to the end of the fretboard on both necks. The finger picks can really dig into the finish if you do any rough or fast picking.

Since it's the shorter scale, use heavier strings.

but avoid putting to much tension to the tuners, like using heavier strings on E13th tuning. ( I wouldn't go heavier than .010 for the 1st string G#)

You have a great guitar. Many feel that the pickups on the Dual Professional were the best Fender used.

I have a triple-8 professional. I must say, the tone of those pickups is incredible. I've recorded a couple of projects with it and the producers are just blown away by the tone.
