David Fonville and Roosevelt Collier sharing a steel.

Fonville is all over YouTube if you want more. He also plays a Fender DeLuxe 8 left handed. Watch out for that middle leg!

Best,

Bob

Well, there went a whole hour of my day searching out more videos of David Fonville and Roosevelt Collier. WOW! It has been an hour well spent. Thank you.

And then there is Anthony Fox. His left handed pedal steel is custom built, but he also plays a standard Fender lap steel (a Studio DeLuxe, as I recall) left handed.

Here's one. There are more:

Bob,
Do you have any information about copedents or tunings any of these Sacred Steel players use? Also, I can't begin to figure out how to emulate their tone. Mostly, I am amazed by the control and fluidity they all seem to have in one string improvisation.

Don,

This sort of thing has been discussed many times on the Forum. See the Steel Players section for the pedal steel aspect.

Actually, you can play most sacred steel stuff on non-pedal. Six strings are usually Dobro tuning, pitched to G or A. 8 strings or more are usually tuned to E or E7, Darick Campbell uses E6 (C# on the second string), but the way he plays you never hear the characteristic 6th chord sound. Darick has done an instructional video for non-pedal and Chuck for pedal, both for Homespun.

The most important part of the technique is to play along the length of one or two strings, rather than across the strings. Remember, these players have been hearing this music since they were toddlers...

Best,

Bob
